One thing I really like about Popeye and some of these earlier cartoons is how well done the set pieces and backgrounds are rendered.  Popeye and the rest of the characters are drawn in a simplified and exaggerated cartoonist style, while the background have a more realistic look to them.  

I think there was a set of cartoons where they animated the characters over live set footage.  I've always liked that blending of traditional animation and live action, such as in Who framed Roger Rabbit or Cool World.
