Officer Loren, a rookie cop, gets stuck with the last shift (zing!) at a police station that has just been closed down earlier that day. The only reason she's there is to let in the hazmat team that will handle the disposal of any old evidence that may be a biohazard. You know, dirty needles, bloody clothes, decayed packages of drugs, etc. Easy enough, right?
Well, it would be if not for the Charles-Manson looking bum who seems to be able to teleport into and out of the station at will. And the hooker who stops by just long enough to tell Loren a scary story before walking away and vanishing. And the ghost cop with the hole in the back of his head where he blew out his own brains in the station bathroom. And the ghost woman with the bashed in skull who crawls around all Grudge-Girl like. And the three ghosts of a mass-murdering family who hung themselves in the station shortly after their arrest. Oh, and Officer Loren's dead dad keeps calling her and telling her she might have to make the Ultimate Sacrifice in the line of duty that night, just like he did years ago when he went to arrest three members of a mass-murdering family ...
The Last Shift is a good movie for people who are tired of jump scares. There are a few here but most of the movie relies upon good old atmosphere. The woman playing Loren does a great job of conveying her ever-escalating fear, and the movie gives her plenty of varied situations to display that fear. This movie is almost a one-woman show, and the actress nails it.
This movie also gives its audience quite an ending. There are at least three different ways to interpret it, with plenty of evidence to support any of those conclusions.
There are hardly any weaknesses, save perhaps the inclusion of the ripoff Grudge-Girl, and a couple of the forms the family trio take are a bit too "Silent Hill". They just don't fit with the extremely subdued bulk of the movie. Aside from that, the only flaw I can think of is Loren's gun getting shoved right into the camera, revealing with perfect clarity, in close-up, that it's just an airsoft pistol.
This one deserves a watch.
