Bands/Performers that put on a GREAT show

Inspired by another thread, I keep thinking about some of the GREAT shows I've seen...

I think I'd have to pick seeing STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN open for JOE COCKER.  Each were mesmerizing...  though almost half the audience walked out after STEVIE was done, JOE COCKER was even more awesome if one enjoys that blues screechin' sweat rope swingin' rocker sh!t...


What GREAT shows did you see?

Rod Stewart was fun.  Elton John and Billy Joel together were great, and Billy did some songs I was surprised to hear (Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Don't Ask Me Why).  Billy made some jokes about Christie Brinkley raking him over the coals; pretty funny.

Fats Domino at a blues festival. Near the end of his life, but he still got up and pushed the piano around the stage by bumping it with his gut.

A jazz quartet with Ron Carter and Javon Jackson (I believe Eric Reed was on piano and I can't remember the drummer) at Sweet Basil's in Manhattan. Ron's bass solos were amazing and I was about ten feet away with a clear view of him.

Eric Clapton was great in the early 90's.  It was a weird show, though.  Since he had old, classic stuff and newer music, the audience was "split."  For the old stuff, geezers like me would stand and go nuts and the younger folks would sit looking bored.  Then, he'd play a newer "pop"-ish song and the roles would switch.

The curse of having a 30+ year career of making well-liked music, I guess.

Still, the show rocked.  Opened with "White Room" and ended with "Sunshine of Your Love" for 20+ minutes for an encore.

The Moody Blues put on a great show as well...saw them at an outdoor concert.

There are many others.  What is amazing is the music you can see at small festivals and local places...folks that don't have 'name recognition' but just play.

Ain't FATS DOMINO living?

I saw ERIC CLAPTON (with MARK KNOPFLER?)  It was a great, memorable show but not 'cause of KNOPFLER.

Just to skew the age range here a little away from the old school rockers. Three bigger acts that had truly amazing sets in the last ten years or so that I've seen:

Massive Attack: Just a truly engaging set. Didn't hurt that I love alot of their work but wow what a show. They had two drummers and it was just large scale all the way through.

The above was from that tour but in a different location. I'd recommend scrolling to 23 minutes in for a truly brilliant re-interpretation of their classic 'Teardrop'.

Daft Punk's Alive tour was also incredible, especially because they just sat in their pyramid thing and effectively just pushed buttons the whole time but the reaction and atmosphere was huge during the whole thing.

If it wasn't for the fact that there were a ton of people clearly affected by drugs being general a-holes, The Chemical Brothers Don't Think tour was a terrific show and rather than just play their tracks back to back did mix things up quite a bit the whole time: I just hate it when acts just play the album and it's good to see the changes [although with electronic music it's not really improvisation but it was programmed really effectively.

Yeah, turns out he is. I saw him near the end of his performing life in the late 1990s. He must have been in his late 60s at the time, I was amazed he had so much energy.

Aerosmith in 1976 was fantastic-I saw them in 1990 too still great.
Saw the Dead Boys in NYC once-christ-they were fantastic. In 1979. At the Mudd Club.

Believe it or not, Weird Al puts on a fantastic live show.  A solid 2 and a half hour good time.
