The sleep of reasoner breeds monsters. (sic)

Buggedout Buggedout Buggedout Buggedout Buggedout Buggedout Buggedout

 Mother

When your mother has grown older,
 When her dear, faithful eyes
No longer see life as they once did,
 When her feet, grown tired,
No longer want to carry her as she walks

Then lend her your arm in support,
 Escort her with happy pleasure.
The hour will come when, weeping, you
Must accompany her on her final walk.

And if she asks you something,
 Then give her an answer.
And if she asks again, then speak!
And if she asks yet again, respond to her,
Not impatiently, but with gentle calm.

And if she cannot understand you properly
 Explain all to her happily.
The hour will come, the bitter hour,
When her mouth shall ask no more.

Adolf Hitler, 1923.

A very well-written essay inspired by this photo:

http://humansarefree.com/2013/06/a-picture-story-different-perspective.html

"This is not a monster holding hands with a little girl. This is Adolf Hitler, a man, holding hands with a little girl.

Yeah. It’s f***ing scary. It really is. Do you know why? It’s because you’re seeing that he wasn't  in fact, a monster. You’re seeing in this picture that he was a man. He was a man, and that’s really the saddest part of it all...

Stop dehumanizing Hitler just so you can reassure yourself that 'normal' humans aren't capable of doing bad things. Hitler liked children and dogs, he was a vegetarian and he cried like a little boy when his mother died.

I’m not saying he was a good, innocent person, but when you stop attributing human characteristics to historical figures like Hitler, it’s how you overlook people just like him in real life, and it’s how people like him end up back in power. That’s the real truth: Human Beings are scarier than any ‘monsters’ out there because we’re all born blank slates and BECOME our legacy."

[To be clear I didn't write this, it was an anonymous Internet person]

Hitler was just a man, no different from you or me.  So was Stalin, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao, and all the others.  Such is the true horror: there are no monsters, only men.

Hitler was a man - a deeply warped, evil man, filled with hatred and bitterness.  But he was also capable of friendship, loyalty, and even a certain level of love - although his affections did drive at least one woman to suicide.

Stalin?  Never a trace of normal human emotion.  I honestly think he was the devil incarnate.

I believe many people have always and still can distance themselves from their humanity, enabling crimes of vast proportions.  I do believe that such people are monstrous.  STALIN probably is king sh!t; HITLER though is somehow worse, perhaps because he was popular and complicated.  STALIN was neither.

There was a lingering, unhurried quality to a lot of good songs from that era that isn't there today, however good some later music can be. Karen Carpenter had a wonderful voice.

I was always pulled to this song, which I first looked up in high school when I read The Virgin Suicides, and it is from about the same time as the Carpenter piece:

That book used to screw with my head and this song mellowed me out, lol. I used to talk about both to the nth degree with this boy I knew back then and he finally said, "I don't think there's one possible angle left that you've left unanalyzed now."

Ya know, it's always wise to remember...if Hitler or Stalin or (tyrant name here) had no army willing to follow them, they would do little harm. But, when they can get that ball rolling with the weaknesses of a society...hell is at the door.
