Seventy two years ago today, over a hundred thousand young men - Americans, Britons, and Canadians primarily, supported by a small number of Free French and Polish troops - boarded transports in the choppy English Channel and raced toward the most heavily defended beaches in the world. Artillery shells blew some to bits; others were shredded by machine gun fire the minute the ramps dropped down on the Higgins boats they were riding in. Thousands fell face down on the beaches whose names - Omaha, Juno, Sword, Gold - would be immortalized in film and print. Some cursed, some prayed, some called for their mothers as they died, others gritted their teeth, wept for their fallen comrades, and fought on. By the end of the day, the German machine gun nests were silenced, and as the surf ran red with the blood of heroes, the liberation of Europe from Nazi tyranny had begun.
It's D-Day, America. Don't forget the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation!
