About 20 years ago, I saw a short film in school about a child and a balloon.  I had always assumed that it was The Red Balloon.  I recently decided to rewatch The Red Balloon, only to find that it was a completely different film.  Now I am curious about what it is that I actually watched.

The details are pretty fuzzy, but I remember the plot revolving around a boy who was very attached to a balloon.  I want to say it had a 1970s look to it.  I remember the balloon being red, but I may be mistaken.  It seemed to take place over the course of a day and a night.  The only scene I remember clearly takes place at a house party where the guests are playfully popping balloons with their cigarettes, as the kid looks on fearing for his balloon.

The movie was on 8mm (probably) film, not on video tape.  It was the mid 90s, but I had a teacher who preferred the projector to the TV.  I really enjoyed our "movie days."  I would also like to track down an educational film she ran about a girl who gets sick after a family picnic at a state park.  The film asks "What could have made her sick?", then shows things she did, such as drinking water from a pond, touching wild animals, etc.

Educational films are tough...

The Red Balloon was made in 1956 so it's quite possible there was some story inspired from the short. I've check IMDB and to my surprise there was no remakes until the 2000's (wow almost 50 years). There are a few stories that referenced the Red Balloon but nothing that stands out. WIKI said that The Red Balloon was played mostly in schools between 1970's to 1990's. I've think I saw this short in school. For a 30 minute short it seemed too long and boring at times, I'm not sure if the movie aged well; on the other hand it was interesting to look at France 10 years after world war 2.

I've seemed to type balloons and smoking and found a whole new fetish...

I've did a little search and found this short.

I don't see any info on this short but it seemed to be inspired from The Red Balloon. But I would guess the short was made in the 1980's England (the BMX's seemed to suggest).

Sorry but I'm running into dead ends...

FWIW I recall the exact same short of the little boy and his balloon (yes, I think red) - specifically I very clearly recall the scene at the party where balloons are getting popped. Actually, I too am kind of surprised this is not "THE" RED BALLOON (which I guess I've never seen). The short was in color, it did have a 70s "look" to it, and to further contextualize, I saw it in Kindergarten (on an 8 or 16mm projector!). I'm 43, so alas I must do the math and deduce the film was produced sufficiently in advance of 1983 to make it into NYS public school rotation... this is a puzzler.
