I just read this article about this device called Gatebox that's kind of similar to Amazon's echo (which, basically looks like a small coffee maker, but can respond to voice commands, connect to your electronics and whatnot.) This one though, has a female anime character inside and is kind of touted as a home companion. She'll wake you up, wish you a good day at work, tell you if the weather looks like rain, and even "watch" Tv with you. (She's got a virtual couch and coffee mug in her container.)
I really don't know what to think of this. Technology-wise, it's pretty amazing, but I dunno, the way commercial has the guy being all, "It feels good to know someone is waiting for me when I come home." Comes off as... I dunno, kind of sad really.
I can't be a hypocrite though, if I had the money, I'd probably get one, just for the curiosity factor.
Currently, they're sold in Japan for about $2500. An English language version is in the works, as well as ones with more characters.
