HACKSAW RIDGE was a surprise.

Expect LA LA LAND and MOONLIGHT to clean up most of the major awards between them. Casey Affleck almost a sure thing. Best Actress is the most competitive category.

I enjoyed La La Land, but I really hope that it goes down in flames, not out of spite but because I can't help but feel that it doesn't deserve to win over most of the categories it's in.

I think this is the first time I haven't seen (or heard much about) any of the nominated best movies yet. Actually not even the German contribution to best foreign movie. I havs some serious watching to do.

Going by the trailers, it will probably be LaLaLand, Hell or High Water and Hidden Figures next. And definitely Toni Erdmann.

Strange, no favourites this year.

I was surprised when a South African won an Oscar last year - Margaret Sixel for Mad Max Fury Road - so I hope to be surprised again.   TeddyR

Best Film
I'll take the cash, you can have the award.

I don't see any nominations for Captain America : Civil War, which is why there is some talk of removing cartoon films, just as they did with animated films, from the general film category into its own special cartoon film category.

Best animated film
Not seeing Sing nominated for the award, though we are only going to get a Sing II, it looks like Zootopia to lose, especially with it winning the Golden Globe, which is often a forerunner of the Oscars, for best animated film. Though there is still an outside chance that Moana will walk away with the Oscar for best animated film.
