I was forced to watch this, but it turned out to be a decent film. Its based a a tue story about a faithful dog who continues to wait for his dead master at a train station for about 9 years.  I knew of this film and had no interest in it.  Richard gere being in it may have had a little to do with it. Most of the movie centers around a mans relationship with said dog until he dies from a heart attack. This guy really loves his dog, they take baths together and he even gives the dog massages. He is so into this dog that he ignores everything important around him.  Its kind of uncomfortable in a way. I was waiting for someone in his family to feel a certain kind of way, like "i cant take this anymore , its the dog or a divorce!", it was a heartwarming and sad movie. Oh,  and a remake as well.

The movies are based on the true story of a Japanese Akita who waited for his master at the train station for nine years.  It's quite a touching story.

In Australia, there's a famous poem and song about a dog that guards its master's tuckerbox in a town called Gundagai.  The poem was written in the 1800's, and a statue of the fictitious dog was created in the 1930's.  Hachiko, however, was real.
