Okay, this is weird... I've had it happen twice on two different DVDs (both relatively brand ones).  I'm watching the movie when suddenly the color shifts into a darker spectrum, like I dunno, maybe if someone turned down the brightness or saturation by a level of 50 or so.  It lasted about half a minute then went away.  I thought it might just be the picture tube on my TV going out (cause, while not old, old, it's got some years on it) but when I flipped to cable the color looks just fine.  So, now I'm wondering if my DVD player having some trouble.

I dunno... has anyone else had this problem?  It's a Sony DVD player, which, ironically, even though I picked Sony for brand recognition and (supposedly) high quality, I've noticed that the laser on it is waaaaay too sensitive with scratches and smudges and will seemingly skip and pause at the slightest bit of a damage (someone, think it was this very board, told me Sony's are rather sensitive that way.)

Or maybe it's something with the two DVDs I was playing, I dunno...

My guess is its probably a defect on the DVDS and you just got unlucky seeing two with a similar problem.

I think it could be any one or a combination of several things.

I saw this thread on Video Help where someone was dealing with color shifting.

Maybe try swapping HDMI cables to see if it fixes the problem, or just even reseating the cables to see if that makes the problem go away.

Is there another DVD player around that you can try running these DVDs on to see if it happens there?  Like if you have a computer with a DVD drive and you play it on there does it have the same color shifting issues?

I could try them on the computer yeah.  I'll have to remember that if it happens again.  As of right now, both DVDs were borrows from the library and not ones I personally own.

Certainly.  Is it just those two DVDs?  Does it happen with other DVDs?  If they were borrowed DVDs maybe something happened to them both due to a previous patron.
