A film about 2 adult brothers in poverty.

Ok, so all i remember is that these 2 brothers lived on a dying farm, almost destitute. the oldest then sells the family's horse (or was it a cow?) to buy groceries. the younger brother was sadden and enraged and they end up fighting in the kitchen. i know its more of a drama than horror/scifi/fantasy. but this has always bugged me. lol

I knew that description sounded familiar. It's the movie Tex from 1982 with Matt Dillon as the younger brother and Jim Metzler as the older brother, who sells Matt Dillon's horse to buy groceries, while their father is working the rodeo circuit, and the 2 brothers wind up fighting in the kitchen over the sell of the horse.

Based upon the book of the same title by S. E. Hinton, who has a cameo as Mrs. Barnes in the film.

And while he had done some previously work on TV, this was Emilio Estevez' motion picture debut.

If anyone gets a chance to see the film, it is (IMHO) well worth seeing.
