With the invaders in full retreat, Colesta used her staff of healing to restore the rest of the party to full health. This was actually an extremely close thing, Val had been two rounds away from bleeding out, while Mary was three rounds away. One more hit on Gabrielle, even on minimum damage would have killed her too).

Grimil ran over to thank the party for their aid, although he lamented the destruction of the fire pots, and especially the crossbows which the Duergar lacked the materials to repair. The party offered to supply wood to make new ones and asked about how often these attacks took place. The gnome explained that the attacks would happen frequently enough for them to keep their defences and guard up, but were not a constant thing. Perhaps one a month, although sometimes there would be several waves of attacks over a number of days. As attacks went, this one had been fairly small. The Duergar, he explained were canny warriors but lacked the skills to track the Drow back to their raiding base. While they faced this danger the Duergar would only be able to provide limited military aid. If someone were to eliminate the Drow however, they could afford to lend most of the garrison to help the players.

The group agreed to go into the Underdark, find and eliminate the Drow, but said they would need three or four days to prepare for the expedition.

And with this the game ended for the night.

Tonights session was taken up with identifying the haul of magic items the party had collected and divvying them up. Of note, the armour, shield and long swordof the lord of Irilian was given to Gabrielle.

No one claimed ownership of the Deck of Many Things.

So the group is heading into the Underdark. Or at least the upper part of it. I doubt they will encounter my favourite denizens of the deeps, the Ithilids but there are plenty other creatures for them to meet. By the end of this part they will be wishing they were only fighting Drow who can at least be reasoned with and if only in the short term, even trusted after a fashion. At first I was just going to let the party go down there and let them pick off the Drow, but then I decided on something that would be a bit more bteresting (for me anyway) and put them up against something more insidious. I’d say more but Kristi might read this and spoil the surprise.

If it helps honey, I am not putting you up against frogs.

Although come to think of it there is a race of frog people in the Underdark.

The Tale of the Band of the Icky Hand. Part 45.

A few last-second trades were made within the group on magic items while they made plans for their upcoming trip into the Underdark. The party spoke to Longeron the engineer and the head of their guard (whose name I had forgotten), and gave them money for supplies, told them to look after things until they got back and asked them to recruit enough men to defend their castle, offering two and a half times regular pay (given that with a major war on, sell swords are at a premium). Their guard commander who is a career caravan guard and openly admits to knowing nothing about defending a castle guessed he might need 50 or a 100 men.

The party then went into the cave and the Duergar. Grimal gave each of them a flare which they could use when they returned to let them know to lower the ladders and let them back up. The grey dwarves let down the rope ladders that would take them down the 600 foot cliff down into the Underdark.

It took quite a while to climb down, but they got there unharmed although Colesta came close to falling off. The ground under their feet crunched and looking down, they could see a deep pile of bones all around the cliff base. Hundreds of attacks over seventy years had left a boneyard.

Of course in the resource starved Underdark such a rich source of food was not going to go ignored. The party could hear something slithering over the bones...

Attracted by the movement and the scent of fresh meat, a horde of ten-foot-long caterpillar-like creatures came looking for a meal. Each of them had a toothy maw and multiple tentacles waving from their head. The creatures (Carrion Crawlers) had long feasted on the dead of the battles at the top of the cliff and were unused to having to fight for their meals and were dispatched by the heroes. The sheer numbers of the monsters attacking them took quite a while to kill them all, but eventually, they did all die, but their tentacles were loaded with a poison that left Cadmus and Mary paralyzed for several hours. Cadmus recovered first and was able to use her magic to cure Mary.

With that sorted, the trip into the Underdark was able to continue. The group did not make it as far as they had hoped but found a large cavern that was easily defended with a stream running through it. Everyone settled down on the cavern floor while a guard was sorted out.

And with that the session ended for the night.

The party consists of Cadmus, a human cleric of Lathander, the god of the Morning played by Kristi, Valeria a human rogue played by Tina and Zolis the Narcaleptic Wizard played by Anders.

Hah, was rereading the early posts. Currently on three females. Not sure on Anders, and my brother certainly matches any woman for the length of time he takes in the bathroom getting ready.

The Tale of the Band of the Icky Hand.

When we left off some weeks ago, the party had descended 600 feet down a cliff face into the Underdark, travelled for several hours and then made camp for what they hoped was for the night beside some running water.

What they are about to discover is that if there is a resource vital to survival in the Underdark, then something has claimed it and is living there.

Val sat up on first watch as the others all settled down to sleep. Soon the gentle and not so gentle snores of the others were filling the air like a bunch of lumberjacks battling it out with chainsaws. She was sitting bored with only her own thoughts for company when something gripped her by the waist and started dragging her backwards. She screamed out for help wakening Colesta and Mary. Both of them sat bolt upright, but their movement attracted the attention of whatever had attacked Val and they too found themselves gripped by a long thin, but immensely strong tendril while dragged them off into the dark. Both managed to grab a weapon as they were pulled inexorably into the darkness. In the confusion spells were fired off into the pitch black air, hoping to hit whatever assailed the group but it wasn't until Val was dragged to the maw of the creature and everyone could finally see what was attacking them that they actually managed to hit the monster.

And monster was truly the word to describe it. An immense stalagmite, fully twenty feet tall appeared to have come to life. In addition to the tendril like appendages that had grabbed the party, others waves in the air ready to strike at the first hint of movement. It had no face that they could see, merely a horrible gash like opening filled with the glitter of diamond teeth. Val was perilously close to being dragged into those teeth and in her panic tried to slip free of the thing wrapped around her. Mary was dragged over the sleeping form of Zolis, her kicks and struggles to try and free herself making for a very rude awakening.

Another tendril located Zolis in the confusion, wrapping itself around his leg and pulling him towards the deadly looking fangs of the rock thing. He shrieked and fired off spell after spell, but to no avail while Val tried finally managed to slip free of her bonds, only for another tendril to enmesh her. One arm was dragged into the toothy maw and she screamed at the teeth sank into her shoulder. In desperation she slashed at the monster with her free arm, cutting it deeply and causing a translucent fluid to leak from the wounds. The force of the bite slackened as the thing felt the pain and she dragged her arm free, cutting it deeply on the razor sharp teeth. The scent of blood, wither hers or the beasts own caused it to redouble its efforts. Colesta desperately reached deep into her reserves of powers and summoned up magical phantasms to attack it. The spell she unleashed however was more insidious than that, and for the first (and only) time in its existence the thing knew the sensation of fear. What passed for a mind was overcame with panic and horror at the half real creatures it could see and its heart exploded with the strain. With a crash it fell to the ground.

The monster seemed to have no treasure and another search of the area revealed no more lurking monsters. It was a much more uneasy rest that the group sank into, but nonetheless, they managed to get enough sleep.

Setting off the next day everyone bar Mary started to feel curiously tired. Walking became tiresome and their breathing heavy. They started to find the skeletal remains of many creatures both humanoid and animal, but with no signs of violence on their bodies. The further they traveled the more skeletal remains they found. The further they travelled, the worse the effects seemed to get. Colesta figured it was something in the air and through weezing and coughing, she asked Zolis if he could cast his rope trick spell and give them somewhere to rest and recover. Luckily Zolis had taken that spell, and everyone dragged themselves painfully up the rope.

It took several hours rest for them to recuperate fully, and when they left their extradimensional safe space the air was still of a poor quality (Deep below the ground doesn't have the best air conditioning. This isn't a magical trap just a normal, natural hazard). The piles of bones continued, but it took the party by surprise when with a clacking of bone, two of the piles stood up. Like lizards, but running on their larger back legs the two creatures (skeletal mega-raptors) came running towards them. Colesta cast a spell over the group, hiding them from the senses of the undead. No longer able to detect any prey the two skeletons collapsed back into their inert state.

Of course, they'd be waiting for them on the way back.

Eventually the quality of the air improved enough for them to breath easy, but the hazards were not over yet. They found themselves almost buried under a cave in. Fortunately it wasn't enough to block the corridor.

Travelling on somewhat bruised and battered by the rock fall the party were grateful when the cave they had been travelling through opened into a much wider area. In parts the previous caves had been so low that they were forced to crawl along on hands and knees. They ended up deep enough in a cavern to be unable to see the walls or roof, but gradually they became aware that there was something else out there watching them judging from the noises they could hear to the sides and rear. An attempt was made to find out what was close by, but was soon abandoned when a hail of arrows came raining down on Val as she moved to one side. Chanting soon echoed through the vast chamber in a familiar tongue, but not one anyone in the group could understand. Fearing they were about to be surrounded the party starting running, hoping to find an exit from this huge underground space and into somewhere more defensible. In the ruddy light cast by Val's magic gem (but now held by Colesta), they could see a mound up ahead. It would perhaps make a decent place to make a stand from, or possibly take cover behind from the mysterious archers.

As they approached what looked something like a crooked spear rose up from behind the mound. It was covered in short, bristly hairs. Then it seemed to hinge in the middle and with an audible crunch dug into the rocky ground. Then a second and a third similar thing appeared and more until they had a good enough grip and hefted up what seemed to be a spider-like creature made of nothing but legs. Horrible, tarantula like legs but not limited to the mere eight an arachnid possesses. It hefted its bulk over the top of the mound and wither through eyes they could not see, or from some other hideous means sensed their presence and came scuttling towards them. The damage the horn tipped legs was inflicting on the solid rock it was climbing over left the group in no doubt this monstrous almost spider was indeed a serious threat to them even without its massive size. The creature had been worshipped as a god by the local Goblins and had grown fat and lazy on a diet on easy feeding, steered into its lair by the green skins. It therefore came as something of a surprise when its latest meal (curtesy of Zolis) fed it a fireball. It proved it had a mouth by the screams of pain from it as the party laid into the monster with mace, sword and spell until it was no more than a twitching heap lying on they ground, ichor leaking from its numerous wounds. Panicked by seeing their god vanquished the Goblins fled back into the darkness.

Just after the spiderlike monstrosity, the narrow cave the party had been travelling through got much larger and a wide variety of fungi became apparent, growing on the cave walls and floor. The larger the cavern got, so the mushrooms grew larger until they were passing ones that would dwarf upper world trees. It took a day to travel through this weird forest, but at its end was a pebble strewn beach and the lake edge. The beach extended a short way along either side but did not look wide enough to risk walking around the lake on. Instead it was decided to hack down some mushrooms and create a raft to travel over in, a plan not endorsed by Zolis or Dar'Kanus.

Indeed, when the raft was finished they decided since it only looked large enough for four people that they would await the others return and guard their retreat. Despite plea's from the others they remained steadfast that they were not going to accompany the others in it (translated Anders and Stewart couldn't make the game and I got fed up playing their characters for them).

The four intrepid explorers took to the high seas (or low lake I guess) in their mushroom raft. After 'sailing' for several hours the raft came to a sudden violent halt. One corner dipped dangerously low in the water as something grabbed the raft from beneath. Tentacles came questing up around the boat looking for something to feed on. The occupants stabbed and slashed as whatever it was beneath the surface sought to make a meal of them and managed to inflict enough damage to either kill the beast or at least drive it off.

It took another day or two floating on the lake to reach another shore. Other than it wasn't the same one they had left behind they had no way of knowing where they had landed but the lack of mushroom trees told them they found land elsewhere. Glad to have solid ground under their feet again, it was decided to make camp here for a rest and continue on later.

And with that the session finished for the night.

The Tale of the Band of the Icky Hand. Part 47.

The party searched the steep shale beach they had found themselves carried by the currents to and it appeared completely safe.

Much in the same way as their previous campsite had seemed completely safe until a stalagmite had tried to eat them. They rested up for a few hours, which was interrupted only by the appearance of Gabrielle. She had decided to join the others after all and made effectively what was a surfboard from one of the mushroom trees and paddled across in it. Her return to the group was welcomed and they set off through the dark and winding tunnels, still heading in a north-east direction. The group had forgotten that the Grimal had only been able to give them directions as far as the lake's edge. Indeed as you will see shortly, it seems like the group completely forgot what they were in the Underdark for.

From the darkness up ahead came a lot of noise, indicating either the presence of a lot of things. Or possibly one very big thing. Val decided to scout ahead, but when it was pointed out that she'd have to carry a light source and that while her light source allows her to see 20 feet around her that something glowing in the dark can be spotted from a lot further away. In the end (and of all people to choose for a stealth mission), it was Zolis (who since he was reincarnated into the body of a half orc has Dark Vision) who went to check out the noise.

From the limits of his vision, Zolis could see a crossroads. Traveling from the east to the west was a long train of misery. Cages on the back of wagons pulled by lizards the size of oxen were filled to bursting with all manner of races many of which the mage had never seen before. Just as strangely it was a similar mix of creatures that were guarding them. The guard's movements seemed stilted and unnatural as if they were but puppets on strings. Half a dozen or so strange looking monstrous creatures were apparently in charge. They were human-sized, but unnaturally thin with purple skin and four tentacles around where their mouths would be. As far as he could tell the creatures did not speak to one another or any other creature but the others seemed deferential towards them. The caravan of slaves trundled past, seemingly going on endlessly. From his vantage point in the dark he watched for a few minutes and then returned to tell the others what he had seen.

One of the tentacles creatures.

There was some debate on wither they should intervene or not. In the end it was decided to wait and let it pass before continuing on their way. (just as well really, the Mind Flayers would (literally) have had them for lunch).

Once the caravan had moved on the party discussed which way to go. Trailing the Ithilid caravan was mentioned and then this was dismissed. It then came down to north or west. After a long debate it came down to the western route. After walking on through the tunnels for around six hours they came across a group of fellow adventurers.

I'll copy their description over from how I wrote it down.

Quote
‘You see three people up ahead. Two women and a man. The first woman is dark-skinned, with long curled black hair. She wears what is best described as a fur bikini with matching knee-high boots. She has some jewelry,  a gold armband and a torc with a single red gem in the centre. For weapons, she carries a staff. The second woman is pale skinned and red-haired. You would describe her as being attractive rather than beautiful. While wearing more than her companion, her thin pink short dress and a blue hooded cloak hardly seem suitable for the conditions deep underground. At least her thigh high boots appear more appropriate. You can see neither ornamentation or weapons. The final person at least appears to be wearing armour. A young man with an arrogant expression and short, dark hair. He wears a suit of mail armour underneath a plain yellow tabard and red cloak. His clothes suggest money. He carried a metal kite shield, also yellow with a black circle bearing the device of a birds head. (A Bardic Knowledge roll or Knowledge Heraldry will fail to identify this as belonging to any known coat of arms). Something around the size of a dog is half hidden behind the red-haired girl.

Kristi managed to figure out who they'd bumped into right off.

The other group was looking for their friends. Everyone had been separated somewhere down here and they were trying to find the other half of their group. The party asked what was back the way they'd came and they got more of the parties story from them. They'd found an abandoned village and split up to look around it, but afterwards they'd been unable to find their ranger, barbarian or wizard and had followed this cave system as the only one leading on from the underground village. Both parties agreed to travel on together at least as far as the junction.
