Ever seen that movie with Rick Moranis (I want to say it's called Bully, but I'm not sure) where he's an author and he's at a book signing, but everyone just keeps thinking he's an employee and they ask him where the latest Stephen King book is, and finally he's get so fed up that when a stoner asks him what his book is about he tells him it's about a cemetery that was built on an Indian burial ground...

For some reason I was reminded of this as I read the post.  Hopefully though you've never been in that type of situation.

I get mistaken for an employee often.  Thing is, I have been in some of these bookstores so often I can direct visitors to what they're looking for (after I plug my book! LOL).
