"Charlie,we're in HELL!"-"yeah,ain't it groovy?!"

Director Abel Ferrara plays Reno,a  struggling NYC artist with 2 female room mates living in a sleazy building on a sleazy street surrounded by sleazy people.
In the apartment above his live the members of a punk rock band who play at all hours of the night.
He's broke all the time-he has no money to pay bills.
He's stressed.
Nothing really major makes him crack-just the slow, creeping, fungus that is life in NYC. So-once in a while-he gets a battery operated power drill and kills homeless people.
As far as a horror film goes-there's not a lot of blood and guts. No real tension or suspense at all. It just reels off like real life.  Which is why this is such a good movie. It seems like it could happen to you! Oh-and being a native New Yorker once,I can understand. It made me nostalgic for the old sleaze and smells of that s**thole. I lived there in 1980- The bums, the porn shops, the punk rock scene-felt like old times!

BORING to the point it almost drove me insane, though that may have been the whole point of the exercise.  Looked at in the context of putting you into the main guy's head, it works pretty well.

Yeah, it's not good-- extremely dull and nobody to care about in the film.  But it probably strikes a chord with those that lived in seamy NY back in the day.  One of the first movies I remember seeing in the paper with the "No One Under 17 Will Be Admitted" blurb.  Not really worth the controversy.  I watched this with director and star Abel Ferrara's commentary.. he sounded stoned and/or bone stupid.

I wanted to watch it based off it's reputation, but was highly disappointed when it did.

It's not a good movie.  It's slow and boring.  The only thing it does have going for it is thae fact that it's so sleazy and grimy you'll feel like you need a bath after watching it.
