If it gets made it'll be the 3rd movie based on the popular game franchise. The first is the rarely seen Great (or Grand) Mission to Rescure Princess Peach. The other was a live action film made in 1993.

Cartoon Brew is a fairly well-regarded animation news site. Tho the editor can be a bit passionate about issues which affect animators, I don't think they'd joke about up coming movies.

In short, yes, it is real.

Keep in mind this isn't a sequel to 1993's Super Mario Bros. And it's very early in production, probably more in the planning stages of things.

An animated feature might be the better route for them to take.  Although the Ratchet and Clank movie tanked-leaving the Sly Cooper movie seemingly stuck in production limbo,  the straight to DVD Resident Evil movies were pretty good.

I had no idea the "great mission" existed! from 1986?!! I thought that I had seen all of the mario animated features/shows! Damn, Ive always had a soft spot for the Mario 3 cartoon and that particular era, but when I watched the Great mission I thought, What the hell? Why was the mario 3 show so low quality, oh what could have been.
Im I the only one here that likes the 1993 movie? Its horrible I know, It even p**sed me off when I first saw it but its grown on me. I would still love to see a live action movie.

If you didn't know about Great Mission you probably don't know of the Amada series:

DTV. Mario characters play parts in 3 fairy tales.

There was one other Mario video with Kirby. http://kirby.wikia.com/wiki/Mario_Kirby_Masterpiece

I haven't seen more than a few minutes of these; I've seen none of the Kirby one. I'd like to see them, especially Great Mission. Not all that interested in seeing the 93 Mario film.
