I got several nice things for Christmas this year, plus the usual round of gift cards and a check from my wife's mom.  But the one thing I will treasure most is what my Mom gave me this evening:  the Smith family Bible. A very special Christmas gift - this Bible was purchased in 1834 by Obadiah Smith, my grandfather's grandfather. I am now the fifth Smith to own it since then. It contains the birthday and death records of my family for three generations and also records the births of two slaves born on my family's farm in the 1850's (my grandfather knew them when he was a little boy in the 1890's, 35 years after they were emancipated). There is also an old medicinal recipe written on the back flyleaf!
 A Civil War, two World Wars, four Presidential assassinations, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights movement - this Bible has been in my family through them all!

some of these things maybe untraditional gifts, but the practical items in there I'm just too damn cheap to buy for myself -- except the tooth brush

I ripped my old mattress cover for my bed months ago....it was barely held together as of yesterday morning
