3 down and out Harlem thugs gun down Mafia gangsters who are affiliated with Harlem gangsters for 300,000 $'s.
So it's a race between the gangsters and the cops to catch the gunmen.
This is a damn good movie. Besides Yaphet Kotto and Anthoney Quinn giving bang-up performances, ya got Antonio (Huggy Bear!) Fargas, Gloria Hendry, and Anthony Franciosa!
Lotsa violence. Machine guns blazing. And lotsa social commentary too. The best part for me was the authentic NYC slum locals-cuz I lived there, brother! (not in Harlem- I lived in South Bronx. I was born there.)

Oh yeah- and the theme song is tits!

The local censor board banned this so I only got to see it years later: violent and gripping with a great theme tune.

This is one of the best movies from the Golden Years of Blaxploitation (although, it often gets excluded from Blaxploitation conversations because a caucasian actor, Anthony Quinn, has such a prominent role).

The theme song is a CLASSIC that Quentin Tarantino used for his PAM GRIER vehicle JACKIE BROWN.  I love that 'cause o' PAM

My favourit blaxplotation movie and it has the wrong pedigree, because it was made by white people. Still a terrific film, full of realism, social commentary and over the top violence. A remake dedicating more time to the two main characters and their dinamic could make sense.

My favourit blaxplotation movie and it has the wrong pedigree, because it was made by white people.

Most of them were (made by white people.)

.COFFY (1973) and FOXY BROWN (1974)-Pam Grier's biggest hits, were written and directed by Jack Hill.
.BONE (1972), BLACK CAESER (1973) and HELL UP IN HARLEM (1974) were directed by Larry Cohen.
.SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM, DARKTOWN STRUTTERS, BLACKENSTEIN, ABBY, BLACK BELT JONES- all directed by white folks.
In fact very few of them were made by blacks. There were some black directors- Fred Williamson, the mind boggling Jamaa Fanaka, for example.

Yes, you're right. Still, in my mind it's hard not to think of this one as a "faux" blaxploitation film. And now that I think of it, another of my favourites, "Slaughter's Big Rip-Off" was also directed by a white man, Gordon Douglas. And produced by Roger Corman's AIP, if memory serves.

BTW, make sure you watch the proper version of "Across 110th Street". Some TV versions are still censored. Last time I watched it, some scenes seemed to have been restored (Antonio Fargas' thrist with three hookers), but some violence also seemed to be missing.

I don't think any of them are "phoney." Just because it didn't have a black director- most of the white directors of those films- just let the actors act. Even if the story was a super hero comic book crazy plot-
Pam Grier, Fred Williamson,Antonio Fargas, Jim Brown, Carol Speed, William Marshell-
I could go on forever.
I think Mario Van Peebles did f**king the real first -argh! The MAD BOMB!

I hope it's not YOG-MONSTER FROM SPACE (1970)
IT IS!
