https://nypost.com/2017/08/16/millennials-dont-really-care-about-classic-movies/

The NY Post doesn't have the greatest reputation, but I still thought this was interesting.

Quote
It appears that the “Golden Age of Cinema” has lost its sheen to the young over the years, as millennials are turning their back on classic movies.

A new study finds that less than a quarter of millennials have watched a film from start to finish that was made back in the 1940s or 50s and only a third have seen one from the 1960s.

Thirty percent of young people also admit to never having watched a black and white film all the way through – as opposed to 85 percent of those over 50 – with 20 percent branding the films “boring.”

Any way to change that? Or is this just time marching on, inevitable, unstoppable?

I guess if suddenly b&w movies came back into fashion or some film maker decided to make a bunch of good movies in that format you'd get more people watching them, but I think it is just part of the march of progress. After all how many people would read a book carved into a stone tablet as a pose to a book or kindle?

Its a shame as many of those old films are worth watching and they will miss out a lot.

there IS something that can be done, and i know it works, since it has worked on all of my niece's. i tell them the storyline of a movie, but not the end. when they ask, i tell them they'll have to watch the movie, and they actually DO, because they are very curious young women. then they get their friends to watch it too!
the twins have also turned their kids onto the old cartoons from the 30's and 40's that they used to watch with me when they were little, it's very cool.

I teach media, and there isn't always a lot of time to fill in with the 'classics' from start to finish, but I try to throw it in there every now and then. One of the key texts one of my class studies is "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and kids generally actually love it quite a lot, even though they are apprehensive at the start.

So I'm doing my part!

The SA censors were also apprehensive about that movie: so much so that they banned the thing.  Thumbdown
