THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (1974) was on TCM last night.  Great movie, the way they're supposed to be: compelling, funny, riveting.  It is interesting that 44 years later, this film is prescient of where we are now.  Topics newly explored in the film at the time of its release (like racism, gender roles) are now hot topics again.  WALTER MATTHAU was a superb talent.  ROBERT SHAW is a force of nature; awesome.

Many of my favorite/most-watched movies are crime dramas from the 1970s that take place in New York. This is one of them along with THE FRENCH CONNECTION, SHAFT, SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, TAXI DRIVER, MEAN STREETS, etc.

All great selections.  Let's not forget THE GODFATHER...

THE GODFATHER is my favorite movie of all time. But there's something about New York movies set in the 1970s that I really love.

Since we're talking crime movies here I think it's important in crime movies to neither demonize or glorify criminals. While hard the best way to portray them is as human beings with good and bad points.   Also people need to know that yes, maybe if a few things had gone differently they could be 'criminal scum' too.

ACROSS 110th STREET is also a favorite.
I love  NYC crime movies as well. Brings me back to me home sweet home of the smells of car exhaust, street pizza, and garbage.  Thumbup And I say that in a nice way.

I love ACROSS 110th STREET

One of the great moments in my life was in the 1980s when my girlfriend and I spent a few days in NYC and I bought a Yoohoo from a street vendor.

Again the book by Martin Freedgood writing under the name of John Godey was better. At least I liked the book better than I liked the film. Though, unlike the situation with Ice Station Zebra, I did like the film. Just not as much as the book. Ne'er seen the 2009 remake.

It isn't very good. And the ending stinks.
