Along with watching the Dracula movies, I’ve been digging into some of the non-Dracula/Frankenstein/Mummy films from Hammer. A lot of them are worth a watch, but also frightfully depressing. Like Curse of the Werewolf. It has false imprisonment, rape, and murder. That’s not even getting into the ending. It’s made worse by the fact that these aren’t campy happenings like in the Friday the 13th series since an attempt is made to flesh out most of the characters these tragic things happen to.

I was also watching Hammer’s Nightmare film and had to turn it off. I’ll be back to it at some point, but the black and white film that some of these were shot with adds to the bleak atmosphere. I watch plenty of black and white stuff too, but some of these films aren’t like an episode of the Twilight Zone, some of which come off as downright cheery by comparison.

I wouldn’t categorize these films all as bad. To the contrary some of Hammer’s bleaker stuff seems to be their best. But I kind of prefer the cheesy/campy Hammer stuff to this depressing stuff. You have to be in the right type of mood to really benefit from watching these.

Creatures The World Forgot - made in Africa - isn't all that cheery either.

"The Gorgon" is cracking horror film but it isn't exactly a barrel of laughs.
