This is a somewhat well known movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was surprised by the underwhelming critical response since I thought it was a pretty great experience.
According to Rotten Tomatoes it's because it isn't as good as the book. Well I don't browse Netflix to read a book.
I'm here to watch a movie and I will never, ever read the book because I hate reading. Call me an uneducated neanderthal
but I don't think books are anywhere near as good at telling a story as more modern mediums like movies, TV shows, and video games.
I'm not here to compare the source material to the adaptation, I don't care.

That said I found the film to be pretty impressive. I liked the casting. Brad Pitt did a great job, Kirsten Dunst gave a child performance better than any of her adult roles I've seen.
Also Tom Cruise plays a crazy person very well, hard to believe I know Lookingup. Christian Slater was Christian Slater (aka the worst actor in the movie).

The story follows a vampire named Louis (Brad Pitt) who is telling his story to... I already forgot his name let me look it up... Malloy? Uhh... I guess his name
is just "Malloy". Screw it, he's telling his story to Christian Slater, an editor for a newspaper or something... I think. I kinda forgot everything about his character.
Christian Slater plays somebody forgettable and uninteresting. Who knew?

Louis was once a human with nothing left to live for until he met a vampire named Lestat (Tom Cruise). Lestat drains Louis of all his blood and tells him he can either die or become a vampire, his choice. Louise obviously accepts and the story follows his trials and tribulations as a vampire, needing to kill to stay alive. He later finds a little girl named Claudia who is in denial about her mother dying from the plague. Louis takes pity on her and drinks all her blood to put her out of her misery. He later finds out that she actually survived and Lestat had turned her into a vampire. So the story follows a big happy family of Louis, a vampire that constantly broods about everything, Lestat, a sadistic sociopath, and Claudia, an entitled little brat. Good times.

It's a pretty dark movie and all the vampires have a very poetic and dramatic way of speaking. It's down right uncomfortable in a lot of places, especially anything to do with Kirsten Dunst's character.
But hey, it was a great time and is somewhere in my top two vampire movies... Because I haven't seen a lot of vampire movies. I've seen Twilight... I really wish I didn't but I have in fact seen Twilight.
...I'm never going to talk about that movie ever again.

8/10 (For Interview, I mean. Not Twilight. Literally all of the Twilight films are 1/10)

Having read this and several other of Anne Rice's books I can tell you they are not ones to bother with. By the end of the book I was agreeing with Lestat about Louis and his whining.

I read the book when it first came out in the 70's. Never read another Anne Rice book again.
In fact, the book was so bad, I never felt the need to watch the movie.

And I have to disagree about books.
Perhaps it's a generation gap kinda thing, because when I was young, we got 5 stations on TV-most of it s**t.
We lived out in the boonies-going to the theater was a rare treat. We didn't have vhs tapes. The only way to see a movie was to get lucky if it played on TV.
So books is what I did. I love books.

I too read the book when it was new... er!  I liked it, and I've read it at least twice.  I've read three of ANNE RICE's other books.  The movie INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE is nothing but HAIRDOS!!!  DUMB MOVIE.  I saw it in the theater and the audience roared with laughter after KIRSTEN DUNST cuts her hair off, exits the room, screams, and runs back in with fabulous curls!  The horror!  The horror!

Another memory about books.
When I was a teenager I had a room in the basement. I had a radio and a record player.
I had lots books, including hundreds of comic books.
I usta smoke a joint, put on my headphones and listen to Led Zep, or Dr .Demento on LAV, and read comic books at night. Good times.

It grew on me.

When I was younger I loved that book but came to dislike the series later on and still think Anne Rice is a flake. If I read the book now I am not sure what I'd think but at the time it transported my mind into cool places.

I mention that because I was so into the book I HATED the movie the first time I saw it, since it rankled my purist sensibilities. My cousin even had to grab my arm to keep me from walking out during the scene where Lestat and Louis levitate upward.

She whispered, "Don't leave, you'll get your throat cut outside without me and I want to finish this." (It was a rough part of town.)

Later I came to appreciate the movie for what it was on its own and though it's been a while since I saw it, I imagine I'd enjoy it. The Theater of the Vampires was downright awesome.

So, good performances, good atmosphere, better than most of what Hollywood delivered up in the fantasy (small-f) genre mid-decade, and I'd give it a B+.

I dunno. the book is a 'goth' bible, and, believe it or not, I just can't get into the 'goth' thing.

I liked Some of Anne rice's work.  Interview, the vampire lestat,  queen of the damned and blood and gold.  I got tired of hearing beautiful people  p-ss and moan about how hard being beautiful was.

I remember feeling terrible for Anne when she came down with a case of Christianity,  but was happy for her when she got over it.

Ever read Rice's porn?  Her exit to eden and sleeping beauty stories we're flat out porn and it was too hard core for me to stomach.

That sounds truly wonderful, and was my experience too, minus the joint. Reading comics or books on weekends while listening to Iron Maiden, Queen or even TV shows I had recorded on to cassette tape. I try to do this even now.

Yes, much to my regret, as the time I spent reading it, is time I'll never get back. If it was "good" porn, is there such a thing, then that may have made a difference, but like so much porn, it is both mind numbing and boring, not necessary in that order.

As for Exit to Eden, that was turned into a film in 1994, and while I have never seen the film, I do remember that when it came out, if it was not regarded by critics as being the worst film of the year, it was regarded as being one of the worst films of 1994.

My goodness. When you mentioned Exit To Eden, I thought this was referring to Return To Eden (1983), an Australian mini series which was like our answer to Dynasty. What a load that was.

I went into this expecting bull$&!# and instead was served a decent ham sandwhich, so I was pleasantly surprised.  Not hating tom cruise for being a scietologist helped I guess.

Some things were  xxxxed up,  of course.  Louis in the book blamed himself for his brother's  death and felt guilt,  he wanted to be punished to be damned,  for as he saw it causing g his brother's death. He turned away from the  christian god and rejected him because a priest told him his brother was in hell for committing suicide. These factors lead Louis to want to be damned by accepting lestat's offer.  Better character.

In the movie... My wife died,  my daughter died.  I'm so sad,  please kill me.

Who in the hell cast Armand?!?!?!  He was a perpetual boy in the movie,  like 17, tops! Antonio Bandaras?!  Like hell!

Most of the rest was OK.

If IWTV proves something to me, is that deppresive vampires make poor entertainment. The only good things about the film for me are Tom Cruise's scenario chewing (that was very unexpected) and Neil Jordan occasionally hitting the correct sinister tones. Otherwise, I thiong the film is pretty boring.

The books by Anne Rice are a decent read, at least the first bunch. By the end of the series there are way too many of them to keep track, and the goth and sensual overtones become tiresome. I'd say "Tale of the bodythief" is the last one worth reading.
