The sleep of reasoner breeds monsters. (sic)

There is much to admire in this classic. The fact it is shot in real time, the brave admission on Will Kane's part that, yeah, he's scared (yet he still does what he has to do), the realistic guerrilla-style shootout that stands as an antidote to all those "they all meet in the middle of Main Street" gunfights we've had to see too often, the performances, the simplicity of its plot being buoyed by the depth of what it is all really about, even that theme song that rhymes "prison" with "his'n" is special, and of course, we get to see a future member of European royalty gunning a man down in a solid legit kill! Then, when (SPOILER) Gary Cooper survives the onslaught, he resigns as sheriff, leaving the town where no one else would stand beside him, though he fought alone to defend all these unworthy cowards. Great moment! I consider this among my favorite films and try to watch it ever so often to remind myself how great it is. I really need to get my children to see this and understand what it is all about.

I'm not a fan of GARY COOPER movies; GRACE KELLEY I really like, and she is in my maybe favorite movie (REAR WINDOW) but I am not impressed by her performance.  It stinks.  She was beautiful, but no great actress.

Remade in 2000, to lesser effect (IMHO) with Tom Skerrit in the Gary Cooper role. (IMHO) one of the most interesting aspects of the 1952 film are the 4 gunmen gunning for Gary Cooper's hero. Who are played by Ian McDonald, Lee Van Cleef, Robert Wilkie, and Sheb Wooley.

I believe the budget of that one didn't stretch to paying for a shirt for Michael Madsen's character.  Buggedout
