Just commented on the worst. May as well make a list of the best.

---

Isle of Dogs

By far the best thing I've watched all year and my favorite Wes Anderson movie.
It's a movie about a nasty disease called "Dog flu" that broke out in Japan. All of dogs of Japan are ordered to be quarantined on "Trash Island".
A boy named Atari manages to create a functional plane and flies it to the island to rescue his dog Spots.
Most of the movie is in Japanese without subtitles or any form of translation. In fact the film makes a joke about this in the start by explaining
that while the Japanese isn't translated, the dogs barking is.

By far the best actor in the movie is Bryan Cranston playing a dog named "Chief". Frankly the highlight of the film is hearing Chief's backstory
and watching is relationship with Atari grow as the movie goes on.
It's an absolutely wonderful movie and is one of few films I got the Blu-Ray for.

10/10

Searching

Searching is a movie that takes place exclusively on computer screens.
It details the story of a man who just wants to find his missing daughter and searches the internet to find her.
Now, it's not the first movie to tell the whole story on computer monitors but it IS the first GOOD movie to do so.
The only other film that tried this was Unfriended and that was about as fun as rubbing sandpaper on your face.

It's very tense, emotionally charged, and the acting is absolutely phenomenal.
While I haven't seen it in a while I do want to give it a second watch. It's one of those movies with
plot twists so good you just have to watch it again with the knowledge of the how it ends in mind.

8/10

Sorry To Bother You

I think this movie melted my brain. It's unbelievably bizarre and avant garde in its presentation and humor.
I probably need to give this another watch again soon so maybe I can finally understand exactly what the f**k I watched.
But for as strange as it was I had and absolute blast watching it. I can't tell you anything about it. That'd spoil the fun.

8/10

Hereditary

Yeah, yeah. I know how polarizing this movie is but I really liked it. This is another movie that I can't talk about much.
The less you know about it the better. But while I'm forced to be vague about it I can say it's one of my favorite horror films.
It doesn't focus much on jumpscares and is more of a slow burn type of film. It starts out normal and gets stranger and more uncomfortable as it goes along,
culminating into an absolutely bats**t insane ending.

It's not for everyone, but it was certainly for me.

8/10 (Yeah, I know I've been giving that score a lot, but come on.)

---

I'll give Deadpool 2 and Infinity War an honorable mention as I thought they were both great movies.
But honestly I'm kinda at a point where I'm not that willing to put Marvel films on a best of the year list.
It's ultimately cinematic junk food. But I will say that Deadpool 2 is better than the original and Infinity War is the best movie in the MCU.

THE DEATH OF STALIN was fantastic!
I also enjoyed ANTMAN AND THE WASP, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and a very good low budget horror called HELL HOUSE LLC.
And, going back almost a year, I enjoyed DARKEST HOUR a great deal!!

I still have several more to watch. But to date nothing has superseded DEATH OF STALIN for me. I'll post more later.

So here's my best of 2018 list: https://366weirdmovies.com/top-10-movies-of-2018-mainstream-edition/

Nothing ever knocked DEATH OF STALIN off its perch, but HEREDITARY and THE FAVOURITE came close.

And here's my weirdest movies (or, top 10 movies Indy hates Hatred TongueOut) of 2018: https://366weirdmovies.com/top-10-weird-movies-of-2018/

Off the weird list? Of course not, they're too weird for the mainstream.  Wink

I have not seen a ton of new movies this year, so I am not ready to do a list.   I have seen most of the big tentpole films, but there is a lot of stuff I will need to catch up with on video/streaming.  I think A Quiet Place is my "Best Movie of 2018."  I would probably put Black Panther, Summer of '84, Avengers: Infinity War, and possibly Red Sparrow on there as well.

Sometimes I forget people don't look at limited releases. I try to not pay much attention to major Hollywood releases myself.

I guess you'll hear about some of those when Oscar nominations are announced. We've talked a little about MANDY and THE DEATH OF STALIN in this forum. AJ already mentioned SORRY TO BOTHER YOU and ISLE OF DOGS above.

That, and I've been incredbily busy with my classes all last year. The bulk of the movies that I saw which were a 2018 releases I ended buying the bluray of.
