A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: June 15, 2018, 09:23:30 AM »

I don't normally go see horror films on the big screen, and that may have had something to do with why this film hit me so hard.
But I don't really think so.  More than anything, I think that this movie is purely and simply one of the most terrifying films ever put on screen.  Not many horror movies really scare me, and even fewer do so on an intellectual and visceral level at the same time.  But this movie has a slowly building sense of dread that accelerates to nightmare level by the end; my friend and I both walked out of the theater literally gasping for breath.

Just a short synopsis with no spoilers:  Annie is a successful miniature artist whose mother has recently passed after a long battle with dementia.  She has a sullen, not-quite right 13 year old daughter named Charlie and a 17 year old named David.  Annie's relationship with her mother was a difficult one, and as she struggles to deal with it she becomes alienated from her children.  But when a bizarre accident takes Charlie's life in a particularly brutal fashion, things begin to spiral out of control . . .

I can't recommend this enough to horror fans.  POWERFUL, and deeply terrifying.  5/5

Unbelievably morbid and fascinating the whole way through.
I don't know if I was really scared as much as uncomfortable. I just felt on edge through the whole movie, even the mundane scenes.
There were a couple of odd things that bugged me but they weren't enough to take me out of my perpetual feeling of discomfort.
I thought it was pretty damned engaging and I'd like to see it again some time. I get the feeling this is one of those movies kinda like
The Sixth Sense* where the subtle foreshadowing makes the movie more sensible after seeing it.
I did kinda have that moment when I remembered a line from the very beginning of film that foreshadowed its ending.

Anyway, if you want to see something dark, morbid, surreal, uncomfortable, and disturbing, you've got it right here.

8/10

*Edit

I just realized the mom in Hereditary is the also the mom in Sixth Sense. Funny.

On a tangent, there's a thread on reddit by a guy who went on a disastrous first date.  The post has been removed, but they are both at college, and the girl seemed kind of odd, clicking her tongue all the time.  He asked why, and she said it was because she had just seen Hereditary.  He hadn't seen it so he had no idea why this was important.

She ended up flipping out in anger at another couple at the cafe, demanding they move from her favourite spot.  He bailed on the date and went back to his dorm room, only to see her standing at the end of the hallway, staring at him.  She clicked her tongue and left.  He was really creeped out.

I thought it was a good concept just poorly executed. Everything about it just annoyed me and there wasn't a single character I liked. When it ended my wife and I just looked at each other and said "wtf"

I enjoyed this one although I have to admit I think it didn't live up to the hype of 'scariest movie ever'. I think A quiet place may have it beat for this year but it's close.

A few inconsistencies in the story as well as what I feel was bad casting for the son dropped it down, but there's some stellar stuff here that I really enjoyed and it gets into your brain a little bit.

Just saw it.

The son did not physically look like he belonged in the family, but he gave a good performance.

This was pretty damn great. It's reminiscent of classic horrors like THE SHINING and ROSEMARY'S BABY. Easily the best horror movie of the year, possibly the decade. 5/5.

Best (and scariest) horror movie in many years. Thumbs up!
