FREDRIC MARCH Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931 film)

Every time the FREDRIC MARCH DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931) version is on TCM also with MIRIAM HOPKINS I watch it (last night).  FREDRIC MARCH is always good (if though the films might be meh) that HYDE of his is THE ONE, that makeup, the pre-code details of the plot... sex sex sex... MIRIAM HOPKINS is not a good girl... HYDE kissing her, the one bed, THEIR ROOM, his hideous but completely believable appearance, WOW that version is still mesmerizing and horrifying.  COOL.

There's things to like about SPENCER TRACY's version, but he is a bit hammy WITHOUT great makeup.  Plus, TRACY's version is much tamer than the MARCH version; in fact, it's corny.  The MARCH version sidesteps corn with loathsome lewdness.

The March Hyde was kept from the public for almost 40 years (!) because MGM bought all the rights to the '31 film, thus keeping it "lost".  I myself think the Tracy version is terribly boring.
 As was the Claude Rains' PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

The 1941 version does have INGRID BERGMAN.  MIRIAM HOPKINS is perfect for the part in 1931, the best she ever got (not playin' a rat) and all of the actors are theatrical within which her histrionics are perfect... but, INGRID BERGMAN brings a real pathos to Ivy in her few short 1941 scenes.  1941 also has LANA TURNER.

I do recall hearing about the buy up or something of prints of the 1931... it's definitely too racy for any of the many other monster movies I saw on TV broadcast back in the '60s and '70s... about the same time you were doing the same thing!  I also read Famous Monsters when I could grab a copy or afford one... (not often)...

I'm sure you're right.  I dislike WALLACE BEERY though he serves a few parts well enough. 

Last night INHERIT THE WIND was on... with BOTH of the Hydes: SPENCER TRACY and FREDRIC MARCH.  It's a great movie, but I feel that TRACY gets all of the attention, but the more masterful performance is from MARCH...

True, but by the rules of that day, it was considered a tie, so both actors won the Oscar for Best Actor.
