When speileberg came out against giving oscars to made to be viewed at home movies like on netflix I was against him as it just seemed so arrogant.

Now something even more arrogant has come along.

https://www.tubefilter.com/2019/04/03/doj-netflix-academy-awards-eligibility-antitrust-warning/

You know, if we were under almost any other government I might actually be on the side of the people who want netflix type movies open to oscar consideration, but given what we have in the white house appointing the head of the DoJ I hope the academy awards organization tells the DoJ to go xxxx itself and drops them.

WTF! That's the attitude in Hollywood to this. Why is the federal government intervening in this? I can understand, though, I didn't agree with the decision, why the federal government intervened in the AT&T and Turner Entertainment merger, and why it did not intervene in the Disney and 20th Century Fox acquistion, but this . . .? It doesn't make any sense or reason I can see. And it is not that hard to try to get a film nominated for an Oscar. All you need to do is to show in a theater in L.A. or NYC during the Oscar nominating process.

Yeah, Spielberg wants to change the rules so it's even harder to be on the ballot.

That said...  I guess I have mixed feelings on the feds looking at this.  It doesn't seem that different to me than their previous stuff like restricting studios owning and controlling theaters, same sort of governmental interest.  But it's an industry award, not the means of distribution - it seems the same kind of logic, but the degree is very different.  I dunno.
