Since we are taking a break from my game for a week, Kristi has decided to run a short adventure.

This means I get to play instead of GM'ing so yay!

I'd originally rolled up a two weapon fighter, but one of the other players wanted to go down that route, so I've gone with a Half-Orc barbarian. Decided to go with a fairly traditional one, so I'll be using a two-handed battle axe and charging into combat whenever possible. Anders is going with a cleric, Tina a sorcerer and Cameron is the other fighter.

So Gurt the barbarian having left his past behind him had traveled far to the south. Whatever was in his past he felt he had put sufficient distance between it and him. He found himself traveling as a caravan guard. While the other guards mixed with each other, gambled and joked, Gurt preferred his own company. When not on duty he would spend his time sharpening his massive axe. The other guards left him alone and he was happy with this. The caravan master gave everyone doing guard a loan of a belt with a rope, a lantern and two potions in a pouch.

Our adventure begins with Gurt drawing guard duty with two others. Sasha, a half-elven sorceress, and Garin, a follower of the Moon Goddess, Selune. The caravan had halted outside a large cave and the caravan master ordered them to keep a watch near the mouth of the cave. The other two were obviously somewhat intimidated by the giant, muscular half-orc and left him to his own devices which suited the loner well. When he heard some noises from the cave mouth he wandered closer, throwing his massive axe up and catching it one-handed. A horde of rats came pouring out and he flicked his wickedly shard blade at any who scurried too close to him. By the time they had all ran past five of them had been cleaved in twain. The other pair of guards followed behind him. Being able to see in the dark and hearing louder scurrying deeper in the cave, Gurt decided to wander inside. Sasha lit a torch and then the other pair followed behind. Inside the dark cave, Gurt could see a trio of giant rats chittering in the darkness, their red eyes glowing evily. Deciding the half-orc would make a good meal, the rats came running. Gurt was ready and lashed out with his axe, sending one of the huge creatures to join its smaller cousins. The second clamped its teeth on Gurts arm and ripped a mouthful of flesh. Incensed, Gurts anger rose up and overwhelmed him. In howled in pain and rage and his axe lashed out once more, cutting the beasts head from its body. Seeing the blood running from the barbarian, Garin invoked the power of his god to heal him, while Sasha sent arcane energy flying through the air, burning the third rat, but not killing it. In return, the third rat lept onto her, but Garin got in the way. The rat bit into his neck and the priest collapsed on the ground, blood pouring from the wound.

Gurt's axe buried itself deep in the last rat, and for a few seconds, the only sound was the dripping of rat blood from his axe on the cave floor and his heavy breathing. Recognising that the cleric had healed him, he returned the favour by using one of his healing potions on the unconscious Gerin. Gurt then set to searching the cave. He found a wand, some polished beads and a bag of coins. He suggested splitting the treasure. When the other two agreed, he gave the wand to Sasha, the beads to Gerin and kept the bag of silver coins for himself, chuckling at his easily fooled companions.

Having looted the bodies of the rat's previous victims the threesome headed back out into the night. Much to their shock, the caravan guards were rapidly fleeing into the distance while monstrous fish men stared at them from the nearby lake. One of them advanced toward them, a trident pointed in their direction. Seeing a further chance to spill blood, Gurt yelled a warcry and cut the charging thing to pieces. Its companion seeking to avenge its friend met the same fate. Other fishmen were running up and around the side of a waterfall. Gurt charged towards them, Sasha and Garin deciding the safest place to be was right behind Gurt, followed in his shadow. Four more of the scaly things lurked at the top of the waterfall. They ran at Gurt whose shining blade flashed in the moonlight dispatching three of them, but the fourth found a weak spot in his armour and drove its trident deep into his side. The big fighter collapsed to his knees, bleeding heavily as Sasha and Garin with spell and mace killed the last of the fishmen. Sasha poured her healing potion down his throat, and although it slowed the bleeding it was not enough to save him. Garin used the last of his holy power though and managed to return him to consciousness.

The group was in favour of finding where the carvaners had been taken, but with no trail to follow they had no way of tracking them. Instead it was decided to put the most valuable items from the caravan in one wagon and drive that to their destination.

And with that the session ended for the night.

Gurt's Kill List.
5 Rats.
3 Giant Rats.
6 Saughin.

Opening with the party entering a nameless large town or small city, the group (joined by a monk called Brother Dom) decided first off to sell the rugs and stuff they'd retrieved from the caravan. Finding a rug merchant who by sheer coincidence was the very person who the delivery was for the Sasha shrewdly bargained for a 100 gold finders fee.

We could have gotten 2000 gold. Her bargaining skills may leave something to be desired.

The group was then asked if we were looking for work. Replying in the affirmative, we were told to wait in a local tavern called 'The Drunken Buzzard'. Since he'd been planning on visiting a inn anyway Gurt was more than happy to endorse this course of action. When you are nearly seven feet tall and around 300 lbs of muscle other people tend to agree with your suggestions and the others went along with him. They ordered some food and a lot of drink and were half way through the meal when they were interrupted by a man asking if they were the group who had been to the rug merchant and were looking for work. His attempt to look insistant that they accompany him by putting his hand on the hilt of his sword did not endear him to the group. Nor did it have the desired effect as the group decided to finish their meal first and have another round of drinks just to make it quite clear they were not intimidated.

When they were good and ready (not one second earlier), the group followed their guide back to the house of a local merchant. Gurt's choice of mount (an Ox), couldn't fit through the small postern door the man had wanted to leave unobtrusively through.

Guess he missed the giant Orc in the group then before decided to be stealthy.

Anyway, we met up with the man's employer. He told his son had taken a box of jewels to a nearby ruined temple with his friends to play games with. Something had scared them and they'd abandoned the treasure. He needed some people to go retrieve the gems, possibly forcefully from whatever had chased the children off (hence the hiring of a group of adventurers). Having been offered a suitable reward for retrieving their efforts the group agreed. Gurt thought the story they were being told sounded a bit fishy, but hey he was being offered gold and he'd always considered his morals to be negotiable.

Escorted out of the city, the party travelled to the ancient temple they had been told of. Amongst Gurt's people were many stories of how gemstones come from the eyes of statues of the gods.

He was looking forward to leaving a few blind statues.

Entering the room, a childsize, humanoid(ish) creature confronted them. The flesh was rotting and missing in places, while the head appeared to be an elongated, hollow tube but lined with wicked looking teeth. The creature hissed at them angrily, but Gurt smote it most mightily with his axe, leaving the disgusting looking creature in pieces on the floor. If it had been alive it was dead now.

They ventured further into the dark temple. Unable to see in the dark as well as Gurt, the others lit a torch. He scoffed at the feebleness of his companions and kept his massive battleaxe in his hands, his mighty thews poised to lash out should any more creatures lunge out from the shadowy corners of the building.
