Why do some musicians think they can act? Some can, like Frank Sinatra...but Bob Dylan?

Who's that Girl?

though I give her credit for Desperately Seeking Susan. She was best at playing herself without "acting pretense".

COFFEE & CIGARETTES

Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Jack & Meg White, GZA and RZA

not a film I love, but all the above turn out to be really good actors.

On the plus side, I thought Johnny Cash was great in 5 MINUTES TO LIVE (1961)

I would count ALL the Beatles- because HELP! (1965) . Which I didn't like. And A LONG DAY'S NIGHT (1964). Which Is...ok. MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (1967)-Ugh!  The only Beatles movie I like is the YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) and they don't even do the voices! They only appear briefly at the very end. And the only reason I like that one is because I saw it as a kid at the theater in 1968. I was young- it was a cartoon!

David Bowie was a very good actor. THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY, LABYRITH, THE HUNGER...

Tom Waits has also put out some good work, usually in small eccentric character roles. He did a great job in his segment of THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS.

Hong Kong cinema has a notable movement from actors to singers or singers to actors. Popular actors like Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Nicholas Tse and Ekin Cheng are some examples. Aaron Kwok, I believe, started as a dancer for another pop singer and made it as both a singer and actor. Andy Lau has played to hundreds of thousands, as did the late Leon Lai.

It's almost unheard of for a Western singer to have a very successful film and music career, and they if they make the crossover, they tend to concentrate on one at the expense of the other. Andy Lau has maintained a huge pop career alongside appearing in dozens of films.

There was a South African singer named Ge [Ghey] Korsten who starred in a number of films in the 1960s and 1970s like The Kruger Millions, Hear My Song and others. He wasn't much of an actor but he sang very well and had a good on screen presence.

The soundtrack album for Song In My Heart.
