Both hammer and universal studios made a series of Dracula movies.

Which do you prefer and why?

I will go with the Hammer films because they had a continuity for them throughout most of the series, Universal threw continuity out the window after DRACULA'S DAUGHTER..

As much as I love Bela Lugosi, I have to go with Lee.

In Hammer's favor it has ...
blood
breasts
actual real scary stuff
more dynamic sets
Christopher Lee who and Peter Cushing two of the best actors to ever work in horror
and in general they're just better movies (for the most part)

In Universal's favor it has
Frankenstein
the Wolfman
hunchbacks
a feel that can only be described as more Halloween-like (the holiday, not the series)
Universal also has THREE actors that aren't just the best but DEFINED horror Karloff, Chaney, and Lugosi (shame we never got them all together in the same movie)
It can't be stated enough that Bela Lugosi DEFINED Dracula

Now with that said, Universal had a number of ... lesser efforts in the series.  Son of Dracula wasn't that great, and Carradine wasn't exactly the best Dracula ever, but if you ask me to pick one single Dracula movie for a Halloween movie marathon I'm going to pick Universal's Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein ever time.

(I might also pick Monster Squad, but that doesn't count.)

I'll take Lugosi. Not Universal's Dracula series though. But it don't matter. Because Lugosi IS Dracula.

No blood. No fangs. No red contact lens. But still the coolest.
