Okay, maybe this is an obvious one that everyone but me knows, maybe it's obscure, maybe it was even dubbed into English, all I remember is I was a child, circa 1987, and I somehow got caught up watching this movie from I'd guess the '60s or '70s  about a German (I think he was German) man during wartime.

He fell in love with this woman and they got married, and in one scene he was....apparently in his wife's room at a boarding house (or maybe her relative's house) and the landlady/relative came in and freaked about a man being in her room, and they told the landlady they were married but she doubted them and so they showed her the license and it shut her mouth.

I remember the man had to go off to war....and in the ending scene (gosh a spoiler I guess) the soldier was reading his wife's letter and she was telling him he was going to be a father, and he....I think got shot, and the letter fell into a puddle and the man was dying reaching for this letter, which at least back then I thought was horribly sad. (Still pretty darn awful!)

And that's just about all I remember but I think about that movie from time to time.

Ring any tiny bells? Or any Big Ben size bells?

Sorry, I don't know why I haven't replied to this, RC, but I don't think that's the movie. This movie was probably about a generation older than that one.

But thank you.

The ending almost sounds like the ending of All Quiet on the Western Front.

ER

It wasn't that, but thank you for the suggestion. I doubt I'll ever know.
