The sleep of reasoner breeds monsters. (sic)

I think the first show I ever recorded on VHS was an adaptation of a CS Lewis story called The Magic Box, which ran on our PBS station around the beginning of 1987. I found the tape not long ago and I am going to see if I can get it transferred to DVD or digital. It was a delightfully creepy show about the intrusion of wizards and other magical beings from another dimension, who pierce through the barrier between their world and ours in pursuit of a magic box that was hidden here in our non-magical world. There is a tough little girl on there who can't be scared or bribed or bluffed by the bad guys into telling what she knows about the box, and an evil wizard who is told by a seer the box will be under his hand that same day, which he takes to mean victory, but in a twist, he did literally put his hand over the magic box without realizing it was there, and when he found out he about had a meltdown. Good stuff! I'd love to see it again after a third of a century.

Are you sure this is adapted from a C. S. Lewis story? I'm looking at his IMDB profile and I'm not seeing anything like it.

I wouldn't bet my grandma's immortal soul on it, but I always thought it was Lewis. Huh, let me see if I can find it....

.....that is odd. Well when I get around to getting the tape converted I will see what it says but all these years I thought it was based on one of his stories. Still cool whoever wrote it, but now I'm puzzled.

Okay, at some point between age eight and now I got confused about the title and author. Nope, not CS Lewis, but someone named John Masefield, and it was Box of Delights. Good call, you were right.

This is what it was:
