I don't think it's meant to be outrageous so much as it's meant as a legitimate compliment. Anyone she admires she calls the n-word, including herself! "Outside of society, that's where I wanna be!"

I have PATTI SMITH's album Horses.  It's a great record, but I don't listen to it.  Keep in mind that there used to be a whole "wing" of PUNK back in the early days that really wanted to p**s anybody off...  perhaps PATTI is intentionally in your face.  And calling HERSELF the "n" word.  She saw herself as a white "n....."

But I grew up on Hendrix. I had every one of his records.
