During an online Masterclass Q&A panel, as part of this weekend's Fantasia International Film Festival, director John Carpenter mentioned that out of all his movies -- including Halloween, Escape from New York, and more -- the project he's most proud of is 1982's The Thing.

On top of this, Carpenter offered up a vague, mini-update on a Blumhouse reboot of the iconic alien horror film, saying "I think [Jason Blum's] gonna be working on The Thing. Rebooting The Thing. I may be involved with that. Maybe. Down the road.”

Carpenter is referring to the news, from back in January, that Universal Studios and Blumhouse Productions were developing a remake of The Thing, which will adapt the long lost pages (titled "Frozen Hell") of the horror classic's original 1938 science-fiction novella, Who Goes There?

Below is the full conversation with John Carpenter. The director talking about his possible involvement with the remake comes around the 27:00 mark...
The original Antarctic horror story has spawned three previous film adaptations; the first being Howard Hawks' 1951 classic The Thing from Another World and the second being Carpenter's pioneering The Thing.

In 2011, a prequel to the Carpenter feature, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, also titled The Thing, was released to box office disappointment.

As much as I love Carpenter, I think this is a really bad idea.

I wonder why they didn't consider a sequel.

I'm suddenly reminded of the PC game:

I have that game, but for some reason, I have never played more than about 20 minutes of it.

In the early '90s, right before I graduated from high school, there was a decent sequel/direct follow-up to The Thing (1982) in the form of a short comic book miniseries:

Followed shortly by another silly continuation of the story that had very little to do with the 1982 film at all aside from MacReady arriving on the island:

First rule is, 'The laws of Germany'
Second rule is, 'Be nice to mommy'
Third rule is, 'Don't talk to commies'
Fourth rule is, 'Eat kosher salamis'

CORRECTION to the below: I never read ETERNAL VOWS - that is, as the wiki states, the THIRD comic series. I've only read the first two - but they are worth checking out per the following...

OP:
Both of those comics are really very good and any attempt at a sequel or follow-up would do well to read 'em before proceeding with a screenplay. The first (2-issue) series is short, sweet, frosty, and 100% suspense/action/horror, w/ beautiful artwork. The artwork and pacing on the second (4-issue) series is less impressive - but there are two individual scenes from that 2nd series that I would rate as tense and/or freaky as anything from THING '82 - high-praise indeed. One is a long, dialogue-driven scene in the jungle around a campfire (shades of the fade-out from Carpenter's film), the other is a potential standoff where the lights in the room suddenly go out. Awesome stuff.

I presume Dark Horse still owns the rights to the content of those six issues and publisher Mike Richardson has been pretty open about the HELLBOY films being essential to keeping his lights on the past 20 years, so I imagine he'd be open to negotiating for a "based on" credit...

Also, yes, the video game was cool for... 20-60 minutes.  Lookingup
