The only reason that movie creeps me out is because looking in hind sight about the guy who made it.

...When I was six, this one scared me. I do recall enjoying the feeling. Around the same time, I watched 'Jaws' and although the film itself wasn't frightening I do remember being afraid to go to the toilet lol...

I saw JAWS new its summer so I was going to be 14.  Aside from the jump scares, you forget all that after the boat scenes.  Walking home past the large runoff pipe with water dribbling out of it was spooky!  Always a great movie! 

And then at age eleven, this one came along. Alas none of the sequels (or the remake), would keep the level of frights up. I'd always wondered if the reason this one got under my skin was because of the night terrors I had when I was much younger.

I never understood the popularity of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.  I saw it new in the theater and was not scared by it much, thought it was disappointing.  Frankly, it's corny.

I actually saw most of those NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films and without doubt, the best was the first.  
I do remember the one sequel with the "kids" who had "problems" including the girl who is "bad" in her dreams and says to Freddy: "Let's dance a$$hole!"
I think I've been quoting her for 30 years...

FRIDAY THE 13TH movies were all pretty lame for me, though there are moments in a few I do enjoy.  The first was the best, the second is what really gave us Jason another series I never appreciated.

I think DREAM WARRIORS is actually very good, almost as good as the first one. The rest of the series is a disaster, except from FREDDY VS JASON which is pure awesomeness. I consider NEW NIGHTMARE rather boring to be honest.

I really enjoy Dream Warriors too - actually it's my favourite of the series although the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie is clearly the scariest IMO.

Films that legit scared me as a kid/teen:

Predator (1987) - the skinned people, the big reveal of Predator
Superman III (1983) - the computer attaching itself scenes freaked me out as a kid.
Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (1983) - the Rancor/Jabba stuff
Salem's Lot (1979) - the kid outside the window scenes
Dracula (1979) - vampires keep me awake many nights as a kid- think I accidentally stumbled across a vampire movie marathon on TV back then.
The Brides of Dracula (1960)
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968)
The Shining (1980)- this freaked me out - the twins, the blood, the axe
Poltergeist (1982) - the tree, the clown, even the TV....

Other films that legit scared me over the years:

Black Sabbath (1963) -  "I'm hungry" so much in this one is dread scary in terms of visuals and story...
The Woman in Black (1989) -I think this is one of the absolute scariest of them all! So underrated...
Black Christmas (1974) - this one ranks highly for me too...a  maniac on the loose, arguably one of the first of its kind.
Halloween (1978) - isn't this a given?
Ringu (1998) - simple concept but it really works...
Ju-on: the Grudge (2002) - same here...
Jurassic Park (1993)
Alien (1979)
Kill, Baby, Kill (1966)
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)
The Conjuring (2013)

While not typically what you think of here, films like The Day After (1983), Threads (1984), Miracle Mile (1988), and No Blade of Grass (1970) are scary in many ways too....I'm sure there's many I'm forgetting here too...

the bit in STAR WARS (I think the first one?) where they're stuck in what looks like some kind of flooded elevator shaft and the walls suddenly start coming inwards, absolutely scared me as a kid

so did what I'm guessing must've been the trailer (or one of the trailers) for GHOSTBUSTERS where Slimer races towards the screen. petrified! had kind of forgotten about that...


remembered another film that legit scares me - or at least creeps me the flip out, in a good way - as an adult, and that's VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS

This is a tough one, but the first one that comes to my mind is Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. 


It feels very real with the killer not even revealing the reason he does what he does.  On top of that, there's no good guy in the movie.  There's not even a sign that the police are even out to get them.  They just kill people because they feel like it. 

The whole movie has a very dirty greasy feeling to it with no resolution.
