I spit on Your Grave is universally heralded as a horror classic. People who don't like it have to explain themselves, the mainstream, who see it as the classic that it is, do not.

^ I'm with Hallows on this one.
I have 56 books on horror films.
Hundreds, (no joke) magazines on the subject. NOT ONE have labeled  it as a classic of any kind. Even gore hounds hate it.
Name one source that says it is- just one.
I am not trying to be argumentive with you, Lester. I respect your taste in most films.
But this is a case where I think your diverting from everybody just for a response. Well, that worked, didn't it?  Lookingup

Here's Roger Ebert's review of the film on it's release. And he's about as "mainstream" as you get.

If anything, Lester, I always enjoy you just saying s**t to p**s people off. You been doing that for years. Ain't you getting too old to continue this weird charade?
I mean, we all knew it was a joke from day one. It ain't funny no more.

not taking sides here but seeing as you ask, this one does:

this author also coined the term "final girl"...

^ If the writer thinks I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is good, I hope he or she enjoyed the film.
f**k 'EM.

Having fun with a movie..enjoying it, laughing or crying or both-
This is not an enjoyable film on any level. Watching a woman get gang raped multiple times is not in any way fun to me. I'm sorry.

And if your proud and brag about enjoying it, well...I dunno. Bluesad

can't speak for lester, but I reckon the 'revenge' aspect of the movie is crucial. I mean, I don't think anyone is supposed to 'enjoy' the rape scenes from a point if empathising with the rapists. I don't think anyone has ever suggested that... the villains don't dance away cackling into the night and the credits roll. the bad guys lose....

I understand that. I've seen the film. Yes, she gets revenge. Cuts a guys dick off in a bathtub.
Fact is, it mostly concentrates on her being raped. Not once. 3 TIMES.
A retarded guy is forced to rape a woman.  So much fun!  Hatred
Do you find any kind of enjoyment- of any kind?- of watching this?
Sit down with a group of friends, or your girlfriend, or your wife. Watch it. See how good they think it is.
If you enjoy something this vile doesn't give you a badge of some kind.

personally I think as long as it's acting, and it's consensual among adults, then it's fair game to be depicted in a movie. that's my general stance.

where do you stand on STRAW DOGS?

I admit there are films out there whose plot I've read and I've decided point blank that I never want to see them. not even out of curiosity. A SERBIAN FILM for example. that's my choice. but I wouldn't slam anyone for deciding to watch it

Zombie no.one, I agree with you on A Serbian Movie. I refuse to watch it, after hearing some of the elements in it. For slightly different reasons I also won't watch The Human Centipede movies.

I've seen Straw Dogs and I Spit On Your Grave (original). Mostly I watched them because they were on a list of the most disturbing movies, or something along those lines (along with Driller Killer, Island of Death and Ichi the Killer), and I wanted to see why they were viewed as being so far out there. Most of them I watched and didn't see what the fuss was about (except Island of Death, that one is messed up).

STRAW DOGS is well acted. A SERBIAN FILM I have no desire to see.
I actually enjoyed LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. Mostly because of David Hess.
And the "Road Leads to Nowhere" song.
I dunno...I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is just devoid of any entertainment value.
ISLAND OF DEATH was just too stupid to take serious. The bright red paint, I mean blood, was too dumb for me to take it for anything more than what it is- exploitive cartoon violence.
Lester, I'm sorry if I jumped on you just because of an opinion about an old movie.
It was boorish of me and stupid.
I am NOT sorry for saying the movie is s**t. Because it is in every way. I like BAD movies. This is not a BAD movie. It's useless.

I am okay with STRAW DOGS.  It reminds me of a John Waters movie ...but amped to 11.

However, I am with you I cannot bring myself to watch THE SERBIAN FILM.  My roommmate has downloaded movies he's labled:  TOTALLY F'D  UP MOVIES. It is 100% accurately labled.  I saw LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG.  It's been described to me as THE SERBIAN FILM but lite.   Porno gang is F'D UP.

Some films "bad" or otherwise generate an emotional response.  Lots of films have been re-assessed, some warrant such.  Critics now praising I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is akin to critics now denigrating CITIZEN KANE.  It is a matter of taste.  As Bad movie lovers, we can appreciate bad taste, even tastelessness, but violence, rape and cruelty are not to my own taste.

Another film that would be on my 'worst' list is BLOODSUCKING FREAKS (1976).
Not because it's disturbing, just because it's boring and stupid.
I had it on vhs. I dunno what happened to it. I think I just gave it to someone. And I paid money for it! In a nice clamshell box about 25 years ago! Waste of money I could have spent on whiskey or dog food.
And I didn't even have a dog!

BLOODSUCKING FREAKS would be the caliber of fans of THAT film (blood sucking freaks).  It's 2 redeeming graces are that it's so cheapo lame and fake... and it involves no rape.

I guess we all seem to be on the same page with that one then...

I actually enjoyed LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. Mostly because of David Hess.

it's weird, David Hess plays more or less the same character in that as he does in HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK and HITCH HIKE but for some reason I can't stand him in those 2 films, but I like him in LAST HOUSE...  Question

That's because HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK is just plain dumb.  The other must be comparable.
