An article giving the case for Bela Lugosi having played another Universal classic monster.

I hadn't really thought of him as a "Universal Monster" but the article does make a good argument in his favor.

I'd also considered him in the same category as characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Renfeild.  They aren't part of the monster club themselves, but they fit right in with them.

I also realize that if you had just asked me about a generic "Igor" I would have had no problems saying he was a classic monster.  Ygor though, for some reason, feels different.

I didn't know there was a "generic" Igor. I can't recall any movie monster named Igor at all.
Maybe in comedy skits or TV commercials. But not in an actual movie.
Ygor was the star in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, and GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. To steal the show from the likes of Basil Rathbone, Lionel Atwill, and Boris Karloff is no easy feat!

Small | Large

Do I think Ygor is a classic Universal Monster? I'm mixed on it. Like the writer says- the Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback were just deformed people. But they have Aurora model kits!
