Shirley Jackson's novel is one of the most poetic, haunting, spooky  books I ever read.
This series has NOTHING in common with that.
It's meandering, Dark Shadows soap opera nonsense that borrows a few lines from the book, some character names-and that is it. ARGHHH! It's like calling the 1998 Godzilla movie a Godzilla movie.
It's like calling that frozen mystery meat sandwhich you buy from a vending machine at work a hamburger.
It's s**t.

I agree. It's even worse than the 1999 remake. The novel is perfect, the 1963 film version is a classic, everyone else leave Hill House alone.

I tried watching the series, but found it dull and gave up.

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against the hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”

You'd think Milhouse has gone through enough things already (reads the thread title again) Huh... nevermind.

I bought a ex rental VHS of it about 10 years ago and the tape was sealed: when I got it home, someone had taped the movie over with another film  Buggedout TeddyR

You never know what can happen. Back when it was first released, Heaven's Gate was universally reviled. If you told anyone at the time that it would eventually be added to the Criterion Collection, you'd probably get an extended vacation at the Padded Wall Arms.

I remember my folks were invited to the local cinema's premiere of that movie: when they came home, I asked them how it was and Dad said "Please go see it on the weekend and see if you can make any sense of it as I couldn't."  Buggedout

Well, if they saw the truncated version... the full cut is nearly four hours long.

I have my own love / hate relationship with "Heaven's Gate". I watched it on TV while I was in college, and my head was saturated with all the lessons I had had to study. When I realised I was watching something with essentially no plot I was exhilarated. So refreshing.

I haven't watched it again ever since, I'm afraid I'm going to hate it.

The cut they saw at the premiere was the 149 minute version.

I believe that when Michael Cimino screened the first cut to United Artists' big wigs, the cut he had was 5 hours, 25 min and he had the cheek to say "It will be 15 minutes shorter."  Buggedout
