Sat down today and wrote a short story using a pen. It is about 20 years since I last did that.

Fact: there has never actually been a real confirmed case of people putting anything in Halloween candy to give little kids. Think about it: it would be traced right away. The people would have to move in the middle of the night to get away with it

Sorry, but the local news just reported some safety pins in candy this past Halloween in my state. I'll dig up a link later.

I think there was one case of poisoning in 1974, when a Texas man murdered his own son....
Razorblades & needles, I think, have always been around..... There was one case in my town when I was a kid.....

Looking over my facebook memories, I'm thinking that, more than the jump the shark moment, you can tell a TV show isn't going to last by how many times it gets preempted, particularly by something local.....

I'm not sure why but I see a lot of LDS/Mormon missionaries around where I live, and when I pass them while driving I always try to wave to them. They're invariably friendly and wave back.

Yesterday I saw the two young men I'd waved to earlier sitting at a picnic table in a park, enjoying the upper-seventies temperature, with their bicycles on kick-stands beside them, so, having a few spare minutes to wait on my cousin, I pulled into the park and went over and said hi to them, asked where they were from (Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona), welcomed them to the community and offered them some snacks I'd just bought for a party; they politely declined and seemed utterly cordial.

Got to talking to these young men, maybe nineteen or so, whose name tags called them "Elder"  which I always find ironic, and I mentioned it was my daughter's birthday; they vicariously wished her a happy birthday, they were nice fellas, you know?

Talked a little longer and I asked how their day was going. Fine, doing God's work, etc. But I noticed they were a little off somehow at mention of their day, and after talking a few more minutes one told me they'd run into some wizenheimer who'd invited them into his house and when they got in there they saw he had porn on his giant screen tv, playing with the sound down.

So he was messing with you guys, I said sympathetically.

Yes, said one of the two, and now we have to report to the discipline (I think he called it "supervisor"?) that we saw an adult film so he can decide what to do about our conduct violation.

He may recall us for a few days, the other informed me.

But....you didn't do it on purpose, I said.

Almost at once they both answered, It's an honor code matter.

Well, there's no crescendo coming here, I just thought that was...wow.

So you know that English guy I've mentioned I used to hang out with, the one who liked my t-shirt and who later got murdered in prison? Well one time when he accidentally gave me a near-concussion he bought me six different pints of ice cream when I was recovering and said take one bite of each and then we'll throw them away. (Even when he was contrite he was controlling.) So I did and it was kinda fun in a decadent, "gee, wonder if this guy's gonna kill me sometime" way. Anyhow, tonight while I was watching Babylon 5 I had the strongest urge to go buy six different pints of ice cream and after one bite from each, throw them away, making me wonder (naturally) if his ghost has found me and is now able to influence my thoughts, only instead of wanting to hurt me, he's trying to be nice? With ice cream.

(Ye gods Rick & Morty sucks bad. I can't watch this stuff.)

So anyway, point is, if you've ever had anyone come back from the dead and try to convince you to buy ice cream, I'd love to hear about it. Also, if ghosts can't cross water, how'd he get over the Atlantic? I'm trying to be scientific about this but it's very confusing.

This morning I woke up with a thought the young me never would have allowed:

"Another day to spend in God's beautiful world."

A little appreciative humility does the soul no harm.

Dang and I was just there too.

If any type of "drug" could be said to interest me it'd be hallucinogens, but I don't think I'd do well partaking of them because in my mind are many rooms I keep locked for a reason.

When I was a teenager my dad told me about the only time he ever took LSD, it was when he was just starting at Columbia in the '70s, and this older "fast" sort of girl there he was briefly infatuated with talked him into tripping with her. I thought he was going to tell me he had a terrible experience on it but he said "no, worse, it was beautiful and profound." He told me it was like he was intricately alive within the universe as he had never been, that the entire universe was understandable and very personally accessible to his mind, like mysteries were revealed, deep questions were child's play, so he felt like God. He said a feeling that huge and remarkable was tempting to repeat, which he knew he shouldn't, so he never did again.

Plus, I dunno, hearing your father's done a drug makes it uncool when you're fifteen.

Sounds like your Dad took Alan Watts' advice: “If you get the message, hang up the phone. For psychedelic drugs are simply instruments, like microscopes, telescopes, and telephones. The biologist does not sit with eye permanently glued to the microscope, he goes away and works on what he has seen.”

And if I had kids I think I would brag about my drug and sex experiences to make it seem uncool.

When I see people playing pickleball I think good for them, looks fun, like a mutant offspring of ping-pong has escaped the table, but I must admit somewhere deep inside, my inner tennis player wants to scoff it off as a sport for slow folks. I've been invited to play so I may try it out. May enjoy it, who knows.
