30. the UNHOLY 3 (1925)

Remember the Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs finds a baby in a pram who turns out to be a midget gangster?
This is where the idea came from.

Remade in 1930- it was Lon Chaney's only sound picture. It was also his last.

31. HAXAN (1922) aka WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES

Quasi- doc about the history of witchcraft.
Words can't describe how weird this film is.
I first saw it on PBS uhf channel 34 in about 1973. About the year I discovered Black Sabbath and Led Zep thanks to my older brother Mike.

Are there cows in hell? Because this Satan is churning some butter!

William S. Burroughs narrated a 1968 re-release of this film, which I caught on TCM some years back.
Perfect choice.

^ I always found it amazing, even with the dorky monster and dated plot, how enjoyable this film still is.

^ I don't know why, but I never got into Keaton or Chaplin. I acknowledge their talent and importance, but the films themselves always leave me flat. Yet I love silent Stan and Ollie films and Harold Llyod. Go figure.
