I AM THE BAD PHOTOSHOP EFFECT!

« on: July 29, 2022, 10:42:04 PM »

Just got back from Jordan Peele's latest movie. I kind of had to see it this weekend.  I didn't have a chance to see it when it first came out. It is one of those movies that works better when you really don't know that much than the basics going in.  This makes it hard to talk about without spoilers, and I was starting to see them in my youtube recommendations.

I'll just say I really enjoyed it. There's some really great sequences, and a take on the UFO mythology I haven't seen many movies use before.

8.5 out of 10.  I do recommend seeing it.

I thought is was either the best average movie of 2022, or the worst above-average movie of 2022. Nice build-up, focused on characterization and spookiness with a few chuckles along the way (great laugh the first time he says the title), but the rules of the game were not really well-explained in the final act. I agree it's worth seeing.

I thought this one was very neat, certainly worth seeing. I'd rate it a bit higher that the Reverend. Great use of flashback and ellipsis for storytelling.

The only quibble I have is that it takes it sweet time to get going, but that is something I have with many modern movies. This has also to do with that there is a lot to set up to do. By the time you reach the finale, there is an entire arsenal of Chekhov stacked up, which does pay off.

On a side note, was that a Triumph Dolomite that the Holst character was driving?

Finally caught it around Thanksgiving. I found parts to be brilliant, others maybe a little underdeveloped. At the end I was impressed if not wholly satisfied. The greatest commendation for Peele is that now he's made three movies about black Americans that are scary, entertaining, challenging, and all extremely distinct from one another - he's not resting on formula, certainly. Just hope he's got access to the consistent funding and can keep it up...
