"Bubba Ho-Tep" preimered last night at the CineVegas Film Festival in Las Vegas.
Both writer/director Don Coscarelli(the "Phanstam" man)and Bruce Campbell are in fine form here,as a stolen mummy(from a Texas exhibit)stalks a nursing home, with two patients who live in the personas of Elvis(Campbell)and JFK(Ossie Davis) eventually take on the mummy to save their home.
Despite the miniumal plot, and miniumal use of Davis, this film still mightily rocks, with Campbell's flawless performance as Elvis being the most hilarious, entertaining staying power of this film, truckloads of raunchy humor(this Elvis is pretty profane, and sprouts a lot of dick  jokes),as is Davis as the black ,post-assassination recooperating ex-president,and Coscarelli's savvy directing style, which proves he can do more than just "Phantasm",as well as cool cameos by Reggie Bannister(as the home adminstrator)and "Phantasm 4" "s Heidi Maulbaum(as a foxy chick visiting the home, and stirring up Elvis' loins).
Coscarelli also promise the upcoming sequels "Bubba Nosferatu"(Elvis Vs. the She Vampires)and "Bubba Sasquatch"(Elvis Vs. Bigfoot)as soon as he gets a distrubtor for this baby, which is a sheerly hilarious, originality bursting keeper.

For those who like to read check out the short story Bubba Ho-Tep by Joe R. Lansdale in his anthology Writer of the Purple Rage.  Lansdale is a gonzo talent, filled with gore, sex and gallows humor, but packing a mature, literate voice.  He's my favorite writer.

Joe R. Lansdale?  Just another reason for me to see this movie.

Still, it seems pretty unlikely it will hit a theater in my area.  Well, there's always a chance.
