The sleep of reasoner breeds monsters. (sic)

When I was around eight I was staying the night with my cousin and she got me to watch a Saturday night episode of Elvira that had a movie on it that simply opened my skull and dumped night soil on my innocent little brain, and I've sometimes wondered what this warped and warping piece of sick cinema was.

Here's just about all I have to go on....

It was set in Germany, I think, during the late Middle Ages or maybe during the regional anarchy of the Thirty Years War, and there was this twisted Puritan Inquisitor type who went around arresting and torturing people for their sins, as I remember it. A troupe of puppeteers comes to town and he has them taken and tortured to death.

Maybe it was exaggerated to my brain at that age but at the time and in memory this disturbing movie seemed much darker and sicker than typical Movie Macabre fare.

Anyone know the movie?

I think this movie is Mark of The Devil: not exactly sure but I think so.

I agree with Trevor. I didn't remember puppeteers in MARK OF THE DEVIL, but a quick Google search shows that some reviews mention it. I am surprised they could cut that grisly film enough to show on Elvira!

Thank you one and all, guys! I'd wondered what movie it was almost all my life.

Yes, Rev, it shocked me as a kid and was wall to wall disturbing content.

The more I think about it the more I wonder if my cousin truly just happened upon it on TV that night or taped it off Elvira because it was so lurid and I was her victim.

Did Peter Cushing play the inquisitor in that one?  I think I have seen part of it.

If memory serves me, that was Reggie Nalder, the vampire dude from SALEMS LOT.

No. Cushing played a witch-hunter in a movie called TWINS OF EVIL.

Moving to Solved.
