1. I hate Richard Gere
2. I hate stylish MTV directors who can't hold a camera still to save their life. If you're gonna be artsy it better fit the story.
3. That said, I liked this movie, even though it has both 1 and 2

The atmosphere was great. The scares made me jump (hard to do).
I'll probably never want to watch it again, but I'd still recommend it.

After all the s**t that 2001 gave us, this was definitely a breath of fresh-air to kick off 2002.

I agree, although I don't think they should have given away quite so much in the ads for it. And why is it that none of the books I have about unexplained creatures and occurances mentions the phone calls or the bridge collapse?

I just got done watching the movie and thought it was amazing.

I did notice at the beginning all the director's little "flourishes", and was hoping that they wouldn't ruin the movie.  They didn't.  Amidst the context of the movie it was important to establish that the characters were living in an odd web of synchronicity.  In fact, the connections of visual motifs and aural hallucinations had me wondering if the town was in the grip of mass schizophrenia, a disease which causes the mind to find meaningless connections fraught with meaning.

Mass schizophrenia, however, is a pretty retarded diagnosis.

I was also thinking that the ending was laying it on a little thick until I found out it wasn't the real ending.  The bridge collapse was completely unexpected (by me at least), and it brought the entire movie together under an "end of the world" scenario.  Not to mention it looked fantastic.

I also really enjoyed the soundtrack to this movie.  Don't watch the video on the DVD though.  It's kind of cheesy.

I don't really have much interest in reading up on the actual Mothman occurences.  From all the paranormal reading I did as a child, the Mothman happenings always struck me as among the most interesting.  But I don't believe the movie and whatever actually happened have much to say to each other.  In fact, the "based on a true story" aspect may be the weakest part of the movie.

Anyway, I thought this was an incredibly effective, thought-provoking little thriller.  I would've liked a little more subtlety from the director, minor tweaks here and there, but for the most part the artistic direction worked wonderfully well.  I look forward to more from this guy.  (Not backward, though.  I certainly never need to see ARLINGTON ROAD again.)

If you like, this movie and SIGNS complement each other nicely.  I'd say I enjoyed THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES more, but it may be because I didn't see it back to back with EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS.

Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.
