New "Devil and Daniel Webster" Not to Be

It is a true testament to what a great actor Michael Caine is that a man who has starred in both JAWS THE REVENGE and THE SWARM continues to this day to be one of Hollywood's most respected thespians.

Hell, John Gielgud (er, Sir John) was in Caligula, and even if you cut out the porno parts (which Guccione filmed in secret, without  the regular director's knowledge) it is still a sick movie, and not in a good way, like Clockwork Orange.

And Sigourney Weaver in Aliens 3?  Shudder.  I figure most actors do want to keep working and earning money, at least partly to keep their name out there.  Even if they are in a string of flops, one good role can get them back in the spotlight, so they can go back to making flops (not that I'm talking about John Travolta. . .)

Well, that answers that question. I had forgotten whether Hopkins was to play Webster or the Devil. Wasn't Hewitt suppose to play the Devil in this one?
I suppose it its for the best, considering how badly Hollywood has done recently in remaking classic films of the past.
At least we still have the original "The Devil and Daniel Webster" w/ Walter Huston as the Devil and Edward Arnold as Daniel Webster. Well worth watching. (IMHO)
Based on a classic short story by Stephen Vincent Benet, it also gave rise to a stage play called "Mr. Scratch," I believe.
