The new movies images and links you put up above in the left hand corner are nice.  It adds to the message board.

Thanks, I actually agonized about that for a little bit.  The thing is:  advertising income is definitely going down and the site has always run just shy of breaking even.  Maybe I should have gone ahead and been the ad whore back when plastering the site would've been a pretty nice extra source of income.

Naw.

As is, the main source of income from the site (to pay for 1.1mbps bandwidth) is movie sales.  Only seemed natural to add some covers with links to purchase the films.  So long as it doesn't annoy anyone too much I'll add more films to the mix.

I've always liked video covers, I'd always get excited as a child when my parents took me to the local video shop (I was easily pleased).

---

Advertising is is an evil everyone has to encounter when surfing the net, the whole place is crammed up with pop-ups banners ans spam. It's nice to find a site that cares about what it's readers think when it comes to advertising.

Also, I've always been suprised about your sites lack of advertising, and when you do use it it seems to fit in with it's suroundings.

Just stay away from pop-ups.

I ended my agreement with Advertising.com because the kept putting pop-ups in my rotation.  This was after I told them via email and over the phone that I did not want any of the cursed things.  After removing them I sent a rather nasty email.  Funny thing, they've never paid me my final account (of course, nor did Reel.com).

Ads help pay the bills, but knowing you all are happy counts for a lot.

You know, I hope that the Buckaroo Banzai DVD cover (when it finally comes out) is the classic one.  I have the LD and just love that cover - it rocks.

The Krull cover serves as a reminder that I've got to get off my butt and buy it on DVD.When it came out mid 80's I thought I was the only person who liked it (same goes for Tron.)

Wait a minute. . . this site breaks even?  Congatulations!

I wouldn't worry about "selling out" to advertising.  At least in this case.  Providing links to purchase movies you have reviews of is a natural.  Consider that movie reviews are another form of advertising for the films involved.  A little more content than trailers, and not always positive, but advertising nonetheless.  Links to purchase fit in nicely, and if it gets you money, all the better.

Take for example, I buy video game magazines all the time.  They let me know what games are coming out, and what games are worth buying.  In essence, advertising.  But advertising I pay for.

So I wouldn't worry, unless the inevitable taint of marketing keeps you up at night.

That being said, pop-ups are the devil's work.
