Yesterday, I just viewed the original AIP-TV version of WAR OF THE MONSTERS. Having not been available on collectors VHS for a long time, Sinister Cinema has released this rare Gamera film on VHS from a good conditioned 16mm print.
The dubbing is quite better than Sandy Frank's version and the panned-scanned image isn't too distracting. However, the original Japanese version and Sandy Frank's re-issue runs a total 101 minutes. The AIP-TV cut removed the scenes of the scientists and generals discusssing on how to destroy Barugon. But, it makes the film run smoother and the narration filles out the removed footage so it's no great loss.
Taken from a 16mm print, the color is in so-so condition and almost has some saturation (but this was shown on early television, so I take it as it is). But, it is complete and their are no annoying jump cuts that can be found in poor shape 35mm prints.
So if you are fed up with the horrid Sandy Frank dubbed version, pick up the AIP-TV release which, in my opinion, is FAR SUPERIOR than Frank's release.
