Undisputed

I just rented "Undisputed," starring Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames, last night.  The plot was interesting as were some of the characters, but the ending was a bit dull.  The movie almost suggests a satire of Mike Tyson and the Hurricane put into one.  There's definitely a Tyson parody with rape and prison.

Prison movies are always interesting because we're presented with another side of society, dark, gloomy, yet highly organized and secretive.  In this movie, the prisoners run the prison.  Also, Snipes' character, althought the central hero, has very little character development.  The "Ice Man" (Rhames), seems to be in every scene and carries the story.

The most disappointing part is the fight between the two boxers (Snipes and Rhames).  It was so badly choreographed that I almost threw up.  The ending just ruined everything, you'll see.

I liked it. It lacked sublety, sure (remember Peter Falk threatening the prison chief?), but it was well directed and it displayed some tasty ironies. About the last fight, I guess Walter Hill didn't want to make it more sophisticated that it is. I also liked the ending, both characters won and lost something at the same time. For Rhames, every victory will have a bittersweet taste from now on, and Snipes' victory is a sad reminder of his condition: no matter how good he is, he'll always be a prisoner.
