I don't understand some things. The most rented movie of the year is Don't Say A Word with Michael Douglas and it was awful. Even the previews were awful. Yet it made the highest rental of the year.

When you go to rent something what do you look for, title? box art? actors.

I definitely look for actors, and I don't see Michael Douglas as being a huge  draw.

I rented "Demon Wind" because the cover of the box had a holographic demon coming in the window.

"Don't Say A Word" was indeed awful!

What a waste of money!

*****  I think most people look for actors... which is a shame, because I think this is having the effect of ruining box art.  How many video boxes do you see nowadays that are even remotely cool?  Usually it's just the faces of the biggest stars in the movie staring thoughtfully out from beneath the title as if to say:

"Hey retard, in case you can't read, Morgan Freeman, Rene Russo, and Dustin Hoffman are in this movie.  They're FAMOUS.  You should rent this."

I usually avoid what everyone else is renting. And often if there are more than 20 copies on the shelf of a movie..it usually sucks. The rule of thumb for most people seems to go with what's familiar..something they've heard of or some big name actor usually promises they'll like it. People are such suckers

I don't understand why most people go to movies based on the actors.  They don't usually have much bearing on whether a movie's good or not.  Sure, you need good acting, but one good actor could be replaced by another.  I can't think of any actors who've been in nothing but good movies.  I also can't think of any actor that would make me see a movie based on them alone.  Well, maybe a porn star might fit that bill.

Anyway, I rarely rent a movie I've never heard of.  I know what movies I want to see, I just have to choose between them when I step in the store.  If it's a movie I've never heard of, the box art has to be interesting enough for me to pick it up.  Secondly the blurb on the back has to pique my interest.

And yup, DON'T SAY A WORD was pretty bad, but look how many people here have seen it anyway.  There you go.

There is only one actor who I will rent no matter what, and that is Edward Norton. He is the best actor I have ever seen and even if the movie sucks (like Death To Smoochy) he still does a great job  with his role.

*****  Kevin Spacey was getting there... and then he made "Pay It Forward."  I avoided seeing it - but everyone I know who saw it said it was worse than even the trailers would indicate.  Then there are actors who NEVER turn in a bad performance, but who DO star in horrible movies.  I think Gene Hackman fits into this category.  Man he has made some real crap, and he's always the best part about those movies.

Sometimes I see previews for movies and I say to myself that there's no way I'd ever pay theater prices to see it, but for the price of a rental I figure what the hell. Occationally I'll get introduced to a new director or actor and then I'll backtrack to see what else they've done. And of course there's always culling the bottom of the barrel for b-movie gems :-), but generally if it's just bad, I'll tend to avoid it.

Well, I m ust say, it is always refreshing to see some movies that are truloy great actually get the credit they deserve. These successes are too few and include The Blair Witch Project, Memento (possibly the best movie ever) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Hopefully some day crap like MIIB will stop being pumped out by the studios and they will actually give Amerrica a chance to watch quality movies

.....because it's MUCH cheaper to rent a bad movie than to go pay for each person in the family at a theatre when the reviews and previews suck.

You can keep Michael Douglas.  The only movie I ever liked him in was The Game.  I thought Brittney Murphy was pretty good though.
