I just saw the Willard remake, and just have to say one thing: This movie ROCKED.

It's really a shame that it's doing so poorly at the box office; I think it's the best black comedy to get a wide-spread Hollywood release since Fight Club. Crispin Glover IS Willard. Some great lines ("Look, you stupid little dog! You wanna see what's in this bag?!"), great scenes (the scene set to Michael Jackson's "Ben" is simply jaw-dropping, though not for the squeamish), and nice in-jokes (Bruce Davison as Willard's father, "Numm Nuts" cereal), plus you wind up feeling for Willard, Socrates, and Ben.

Probably not for all tastes, but if you go to this board, you should probably see it soon, before it gets the boot from the theaters.

I've been looking foward to seeing "Willard" solely for Crispin Glover's performance and NOT the rats of which I've heard look totally fake and computer generated.

However after reading Roger Ebert's review (he whom I agree with most often) I have my doubts....I think I'll drop the money that I was originally going to spend on "Willard" on "Dreamcatcher"  instead.

I know...I know.... "Dreamcatcher"  got bad reviews but I've had my nose in that Stephen King novel for the past 2 weeks.

After reading most of Dreamcatcher I must now see it on the big screen!

I'm on page 733 out of 879....

I thought the remake of WILLARD was decent, but it did not have a lot of the "charm" of the original. However, I will say that Crispin Glover and Lee Ermey were great as Willard and Mr. Martin. My advice is to wait for cable or rental on this one (although, I will probably end up buying the DVD anyway . . . sigh).

I have not seen DREAMCATCHER, but the negative reviews do not surprise me. They started showing trailers for it at the theater about a year ago. Then the trailers disappeared for several months. Then they started showing COMPLETELY DIFFERENT trailers. I have seen this happen before (for instance, THE 13TH WARRIOR: the trailers for the movie under its original title EATERS OF THE DEAD came out a year or two before 13TH WARRIOR was finally released - the same thing happened with that movie where Anthony Hopkins played some sort of animal-man . . . I can't remember the name but I think Cuba Gooding, Jr. was also in it). When this happens, it usually means that the movie got negative feedback from test audiences, so they recalled it and either re-edited it or shot new scenes. Generally, this results in a mess.

If you like williard, you should definately check out "Killer Snakes".  It's just been rereleased as part of the shaw bros mass reissue series.  It's from the 70's,  Totally claustraphbic, intense,  and dark.  From the people who did "Black Magic" .  It was available before from Something Weird Video.  More explitation/ action  than art house...

The whole "test audience" thing eats. A triumph of commercialism over art; just look at the last ten minutes of "Little Shop of Horrors" (Frank Oz version).

Ash.... I dont know where u heard the rats looked fake, but that is a HUGE misconception. Yes there are a few scenes that are clearly computer generated, but they still make a great effect. Once again, these rats look so Real.

Also, do not listen to Burgo, see the movie now, it is one of the few things out there worth the crazy price of movies. I went with two friends who dont even lke horror movies and they loved this.

Another plus is that Stuart Little turns in his best performance yet as Socrates the White Rat. He should get an academy

The CGI effects look somewhat "odd" on the TV trailers.

CGI effects for theatrical films often do look "off" on TV--the same way you can see the faint matte "boxes" around TIE  fighters in "Star Wars," or the Enterprise in the original "Star Trek," especially when watching on an old black-and-white set. Or how even Harryhausen's stop-motion doesn't cut it anymore once you reach a certain age. I saw "Godzilla 2000" on telly the other day, and was incredulous at how much worse the effects looked than when I saw them on the big screen, or even the Japanese video (which I had watched on an older set).

Scenes from "Spider-Man," that I had winced at while watching the TV trailer, looked brilliant on the big screen. Often, because I was engaged in the scene, rather than a single shot, I didn't even remember that I'd seen the shot on TV.

TV commercials use CGI every day, and they look fantastic--realistic to the point that no one even comments on them.

The thing that grabs me about the "Willard" trailer is not the quality of the effects but--and this is a sign of the director's skill--the concepts in each shot, that overwhelm concerns about the effects. The elevator shot is a perfect example; the thought that someone could stand, perfectly calm, up to the top of his head inside a swarm of rats gives me the frikin' screamin' willies.

It'll be a wonderful day on this board when the ongoing p**sing contests about CGI finally end. People squeak and whine about radiosity and blur, but forget that the alternative is blue lines, strobing, matte discolorations and bleed-through, or visible wires. It doesn't matter what the technique is: if it's done well, it works, and it's not, it doesn't.

Hell, for an hour and a half, I accepted Manny, Sid, and Diego as real live "persons"--something Adam Sandler hasn't been able to accomplish in almost all his recent "films." And Sandler IS real. I think.

I just wish movie makers would treat and monitor the effects they create AS IF they were intended for television; then the quality would work on both the big and small screen.

I just read Ebert's review, and while I respect him as a critic, I think he missed the point on this one. The reason it's not that scary is because it's not really a horror movie; it's more of a black comedy. There's not a whole lot of suspense in wondering whether or not Willard will kill his boss; the fun is in revelling in the sheer insanity of it all. Oh, yeah, and the rats didn't look all that fake; in fact, I'm still not sure how many scenes were CGI and how many were real rats.

Like I said before, I think this movie is a bit of an undiscovered gem. If you put aside the "ooh, spooky" marketing campaign, and go in expecting a dark, twisted, psychotronic comedy, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Dangit!!! I really really want to see this movie!!! But none of the local theatres(in town) are playing it and since my car is in the shop(for almost 3 and a half weeks) I can't go else where to see it. This sucks! The movie looks really cool and I'm a big fan of Crispin Glover. Scotty beam to.....SOMEWHERE!!!

I saw it last week...I really enjoyed it.    I thought the performances were great, and my girlfriend and I were quoting the lines to each other days later--always a sign of a good movie.

I thought Crispin went a wee bit over the top at times, but hey, that's Crispin Glover, and I can't imagine anyone else pulling this off.

The audience was really small, though, so I imagine this one will be off the screen within weeks, so see it while you can.
