I know we got into cannibal films a couple of posts ago and I started thinking about all the ones I’ve seen or purchased:

Cannibal Holocaust: this movie really sucks, but probably the most well known. Watching animals get skinned alive does not make a movie gory, just lame. The original Blair Witch Project concept.

Dr. Butcher M.D:  Who was the retard who wrote this piece of crap? Blow-dart assassin in New York? Jonestown Massacre rip-off? Total crap.

Slave Of The Cannibal God: Ursula Andress is nude! (even at age 40, she is looking great).  Sadly Stacy Keach is in the film.  More scenes of animals being killed/skinned and/or eaten by another predator.

Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead: This movie wasn’t too bad, if they removed the porn from it and added a story, it might have been good. The special effects were pretty damn good, but no real big plot to build on.

I Drink Your Blood: A cool concept, a gang of punks mess with a small town, rape a young boy’s sister and spike his grampa’s drink with LSD. The young boy gets them back by injecting their meat pies (which they bought from the boy’s mother) with the blood of a rabid dogs. All hell breaks lose once they eat the pies and begin killing at will. The pace of the movie was bit slow, but I think this is the best movie of all I’ve listed.

Eaten Alive – Another crap-fest along the same lines of Dr. Butcher MD and Slave of the Cannibal God.

Ok people, I’ve listed a couple of cannibal movies. Almost all have sucked. Besides Night Of The Living Dead + Dawn Of The Dead + Day Of The Dead and Cannibal! The Musical, can anyone list an actual good cannibal movie?

Ever seen Umberto Lenzi's "Cannibal Ferox?"  The ad for it falsely claimed it was banned "in 31 countries!"  I doubt if three even saw it, anyways it has a scene of a guy being castrated while tied to a tree-OUCH! This piece redefines bad taste.

I've never seen the film, I figured that the "banned in 31 countries" was a bunch of crap when you could buy the movie and Best Buy. The cover on the DVD looks like your typical horror film with nothing going for it. Chris wrote:

Yay!  I'm finally back from DC and able to post again!
I think my all time favorite cannibal movie would have to be Cannibal:The Musical!  It's one of Trey Parker's very first creations, made while he was still in film college, there's even a scene shot on the school steps.  The budget is low, but they do so much with so little.  The special effects are insane, and the music is surprisingly good, most of the actors have rather good voices.  It's a hilarious, irreverent, bloody, and tuneful movie that's fun for the whole family (sort of).

Wow, I just realised that you already mentioned this one.  Silly me, not a good day for cognition, I suppose.  But my message is still clear, SEE THIS MOVIE.

I'd have to go with RAVENOUS also.  I enjoyed it quite a bit.

To add to the list:

PARENTS - My own personal Gehenna.    Why was this movie ever made?  I own a copy just so I can keep an eye on it.

ALIVE - Slight of a movie about the Andes plane crash.  The only interesting part of its "hurray for life" message was the cannibalism.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES - I have never seen it.

SOYLENT GREEN - Classic, although extremely silly.  Worth it for the last line alone.

CANNIBAL MAN - Hideous European horror film.  No actual cannibalism in movie.  There is quite a bit of homoeroticism, however.

KEEP THE RIVER ON YOUR RIGHT - Documentary about Tobias Schneebaum, a retired anthropoligist who has actually eaten human flesh.  Haven't read the book or seen the movie, but am looking forward to both.

BLOOD DINER - Haven't seen.

EATING RAOUL - Also haven't seen.

CONSUMING PASSIONS - Hey, you got human flesh in my chocolate!  You got chocolate in my human flesh!

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - Of course.

Just the few I can remember at the moment.  There are also quite a few films at IMDb with "cannibal" in their title.  My favorite is CANNIBAL ROLLERBABES.

I don't really count zombie movies as cannibal movies.  The fact that the cannibals are also dead makes all the difference.  Just the same way I don't consider vampire movies cannibal movies.

I think there've been quite a few good movies featuring cannibalism, although maybe not so many about it.  It works well for black comedies.  I don't think there has been a truly good horror movie directly about the subject.

But then, that's my opinion.

You should really see  Eating Raoul.  Its one of Paul Bartel's first forays into directing.  And besides being a hilarious cannibal/swingers film it also features such choice lines as "No! You don't understand man!  I'm an emotional, crazy Chicano!

You won't go far wrong with "Ravenous" - a genuine black comedy. "Eating Raoul", "Motel Hell" ("It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters!"), "Survive" (A Mexican exploitation version of the same story that inspired "Alive"), "Soylent Green", "Make Them Die Slowly" aka "Cannibal Ferox" are all worth a look for varying reasons.

Hey, that's right -- I forget that Eating Raoul and Motel Hell can be thought of as cannibal pictures.  They both have their points and can both be quite (intentionally) funny.
. . . which is why cannibals can't eat clowns:  They taste funny. . .

I just remembered this crazy Hong-Kong cereal killer/horror movie i saw not to long ago-the Untold Story. It's actually based off this real psycho in Hong-Kong who killed this guy and his whole family (!). But the film has it's real disturbing and gory moments, watch out. This ties in with the whole cannibal thing, somewhat, he's not a cannibal, but there's a special ingredient in the "meat pies." Ha ha.

Almost forgot - "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover" is a cannibal movie from Brit "art" film-maker Peter Greenaway. It's all very convoluted, but it ends up with a gangster being forced to eat his wife's lover (whom he has ordered killed.)
